I have a 12 wk old GSD and I'm a first time dog owner. I was lucky enough to find this website before I got him so I know I did some things right at first. I got a couple of the videos from the site and I'm watching them now to try to correct the mistakes I did make.
My puppy was doing really well at first but I moved his crate this weekend to a different room. I thought it would be good for him to be in the same room with me as a prelude to eventually having him out on the leash while I'm on the computer. Wow, was I wrong! Ever since I moved him, he's been acting crazy and barking like mad. His behavior is atrocious!
I don't know if the change of scenery caused this or if it's just puppy behavior that will work itself out in time. Since I've never raised a puppy before, I don't really know what to expect. Any advice you can give me would be appreciated.
I agree but would add that when putting him in his crate, that you give him a treat when he goes in, just as you probably did in the very beginning. Ed Frawley has said that there's no reason why you ever need to stop treating for going in the crate, and I took that advice. It served me well one time in particular when it was crucial that my dog go in immediately. Because he gets a treat every time he goes in, he runs to his crate when I say "place".
Thank you all for responding so quickly. I'm keeping the crate where it is and giving him treats as appropriate. His behavior is getting better while he's in the crate but, when he's playing, he's becoming more aggressive. Not sure if that's his way of playing or if he's challenging my rank. Got to do more reading on this site.
