Deramaxx is a good drug for short-term use. Much better than Rimadyl. I would use it on my dog if needed.

Are you sure it's an injury? I heard from someone who had a dog that presented with a swollen paw, but didn't do anything specific to injure it. After x-rays the vet sent her home with pain meds. The next day the paw was so swollen it was seeping blood through the skin, and he was diagnosed with cellulitis. Just watch him, don't let the swelling get to severe before a recheck. Cellulitis can lead to blood poisoning. IT IS A VERY DANGEROUS, VERY RAPIDLY PROGRESSING CONDITION which requires immediate medical attention. It is not unusual for large areas of the skin and underlying tissue to die and slough off if it is not treated in time. It can cause death
I'm not saying that your dog has this, but be aware. I didn't know about it myself until this dog got it. Hope I didn't scare you

I agree with Sarah about the superiority of Deramaxx (and Metacam) to Rimadyl.
What you want to do is watch carefully for gastric distress. In a short-term protocol, that would be a more likely bad side effect than liver or kidney damaqge, from what I have read. So look for vomiting or diarrhea (or, of course, blood in the stool), and if any of these happens, stop the med and call the vet.
I use Deramaxx long-term for a senior with inoperable spine and hip problems. I first had liver and kidney values checked, and I will re-check them every six months. (Of course, you are not talking about long-term use.)
The bleeding ulcer possibility has not shown itself, so I am now mainly focused on the kindey/liver functions.
For other readers, don't assume that aspirin is safer. It's an NSAID too, and dogs do not do as well as humans on NSAIDs. They require monitoring.
And as Shody points out, you will also want to watch the paw carefully.

My oldest dog is on deramaxx long term. We did a baseline blood panel, gave him the medicine for 30 days and then did another panel, everything looked good, so 6 months from now he gets looked at again and that's it. He has spondylosis and nothing else had any effect including acupuncture, adaquan(sp?) chinese herbs, we even tried rimidyl.Deramaxx is having a great effect, i even let him do a little work last week so he'd have some fun, So as far as i know it's good stuff,

Sounds like your vet is up on using NSAIDs, Al. Too many vets hand over a bottle of Rimadyl and make no mention of what the side effects can be or how to monitor for them.
Dreamaxx is a little more expensive, but it's my choice too, both for a better side-effect record and for what I too see as good results.

now I am curious. Later in the day yesturday Zekes injury started looking like a blister between his middle 2 toes. Don't know how else to describe. It was very swollen and red between the pads. Towards evening it stated oozing puss and blood. Swelling is gone and he is not favoring at all. He won't let me look to hard but now there is an 1/8 inch hole btween his toes. Still a small amount of wetness around the area. Trying to figure out what happened. Thinking fire ants or some kind of bite but was cold, in the 30's and were trying to get pictures in the snow. Any ideas? At least it seems to be OK. Also should I finish the prescription of the Deramaxx?

Sounds like a small abscess that is now draining. Animals can get them from bites or a foreign object.
