Nico went into heat for the first time in several years. FOr the last week and half or so Loki had been following her around and being extra attentive but not overly so.
Then this morning she must have switched modes in her cycle because Loki was out of control. I had been keeping them separated unless I was right with them and this morning he nearly took the door off its hinges trying to get to her. and then was showing signs of true aggression towards the pup.
Loki is now staying with a friend who is a trainer and dogsits proffessionally for probably until the end of the week.
My question is about Fargo though, he still seems totally clueless about it still, he has sniffed a couple times but it seems more out of curiousity because he just wants to play with her; there is no sexual type behaviors going on.
He is no where near mature at 5 months, but is he fertile?
Is watching them like a hawk and separating when im not able to watch enough? or is he likely to dig through a wall or knock a door down too?
Is he fertile? Possibly, rare, but possibly. They generally don't start producing gametes until 6-7 months or so, but I've heard of a few that have. I say better safe than sorry and keep them separated for a week or so, not to mention the fact that it's not the scare of pregnancy that's so bad, it's the whacked out hormonal behavior you have to contend with, lol.

I would be concerned about a female that had not been in heat for several years and then showed signs of being in season.
If she isn't spayed and has not been in heat for that long of a time period, it could be an infection or pyometra or something that may be detrimental to her overall health.
I would have her checked out by a vet well versed in reproductive issues.
I took her in just to make sure because she seemed a little mopey, but everything checked out fine and the vet said it is likely similar to pms in humans. She breeds both horses and dogs so I trust her judgement.
The first time she went into heat I came home and she had torn up an entire chair and ottoman...She had never chewed anything innapropriate in her life, so I thought something was really wrong and rushed her to the vet, in the waiting room I noticed the drops of blood and realized what had happened, so she does have a tendency to get hormonal and weird during her cycle.
She has always had irregular heat cycles, in 11 years she has been in heat 5 or 6 times, she was over 2 before she had her first season.
The reason we didnt spay was her tendency to have severe reactions to medications, along with being prone to skin and staff infections. When you add being a self mutilator on top of that she just isnt a good candidate for surgery.
