Hello Everyone,
I am new to the Leerburg Forum, and was wondering if someone could help me with some information I need. I am from South Florida, and I recently decided that this year I would purchase a pup from Ed. Unfortunately, there will be no breeding in 2008, which has made my search for the right breeder very difficult. I am currently looking online, but I find that every site that I go to says that they have the best pups available; this makes my decision a little overwhelming.
Although I know it would be better for me to be able to see the pups, I wont be able to (since I don’t know of any breeders in Florida) and so I need to be able to trust the breeder that I work with online to properly place the right pup with me. Unfortunately, there are people out there that do this only for the money, and don’t care about their animals. So I would hate to have to go through some of the stories I've heard, or put the animal through something that it doesn’t need to go through (i.e. flights, transport, etc). I am looking only for a working line dog (which is obvious considering I wanted a Leerburg dog), and I prefer that the dog is of East German (DDR) bloodlines. So if anyone could give me some ideas or comments on the breeders I list below, or any other breeder they think I should look into whether in South Florida or anywhere else, I would really appreciate it.
List of breeders I have been looking into:
Schraderhaus K9; Hudsonhaus K9; Kreative Kennels; Vom Banach K9; True Haus Kennels; Vom Fieldcrest (I believe in FL); Von Der Haus Gill GSDs.
Thank you, and Happy Easter.
V/r,
Ahmed

What are your plans for the pup? Sport, personal protection, companion, all of the above? LOL

Hi, Ahmed. If you have any questions about Hudsonhaus pm me. I purchased both of my dogs from Larry Hudson. I'm very happy with both.

Hi Betty,
My plans are to train the dog (once old enough) in PP, but I would like the dog to be a companion as well. The trainer for personal protection is another issue that I have been looking into, because I find too many people in S. FL. with different opinions on this. I want to make sure that whoever is the trainer, has enough experience to do it correctly. I have seen a couple of places down here, and will continue to do research, but will be happy to note any opinions on the subject matter.
Eventually, I would like a dog that can compete in Schutzhund; I think the sport of Schutzhund would be a great way to bond with the dog. And although I would love to have two pups right now, I dont know how fair that will be to either one. So at this point I am sticking to my necessities, and will move on to what I would like as a hobby later. And, based on what I have read, the training for the two are completely different, so I wont be able to do both right now.
Thanks for your feedback, much appreciated.
Ahmed

Ahmed,
There's a forum devoted specifically to Personal Protection Dogs that might aid you in your research, it's populated by a lot of the forum members from here:
http://www.protectiondogforums.com/
The Leerburg website is of course mentioned in the "Links" section there...

Bringing up a pup to compete in sport or learn PP is risky. Rewarding as heck, but risky. No matter what the genetics are there is a lot of wiggle room for the fates to slap you around. Trust me, I know. <Grin>
Just something I thought I would add in to make it even more confusing........

Hi Betty,
You bring up a valid point. It is something that I am willing to work on. As you said it can be very rewarding, and I look forward to going through the process. I will be dedicating a lot of my time to the pup, so hopefully everything turns out okay.
I have ordered several videos from Leerburg, which I know are not a substitute for a professional, but I plan to build a solid relationship with the pup before bringing anyone else into the picture. Is there anything that you would recomend as training for me (lol) or the pup?
Thanks!
Ahmed

Nothing is more rewarding, but it can also be a heartbreaker when after two years you have to retire a dog. Been there, done that and bought the t-shirt!
I started off with Ed's videos also and still have several. Both of the ones showing Flinks are excellent.
Do you have a training group or someone local that can work with you a bit?

I don't think Leerburg dogs have a lot of DDR blood in them

Shoot Jenni Williams a PM regarding her newest pup. I think she's from a Florida breeder DDR working-lines.
