Hi I am a new member to this forum and was wondering if anyone could help me. A friend of mine bought a pup and has the papers and has the freedom to name him whatever he wants...I been around horses by entire life and we just take the best bloodlines from the sire and dam and fit them into the name is it the same for GSD? ~Shelley
Typically ........... with GSDs with import lineage the last name of the kennel preceded by a grammatical prefix appropriate to the kennel name is used.
The litters are then listed alphabetically by a particular kennel for example the "A" "B", "C" etc litter and all dogs in that litter have a name starting with that letter of the alphabet. It does make it easier to track littermates.
Now, with "anything goes" naming your friend can do anything he wants to (though the registry may have some rules). For the sake of politeness it is really NOT considered nice to incorporate someone else's kennel name into his dog's name without permission from the kennel owning that name.
It really does not make a hoot of difference unless the dog is of a lineage that it may be suitable for breeding. Most serious breeders want their kennel name on that puppie's pedigree.
The pup is a out of a son of uta and tell and daughter of bastin...so would you used that at all in the name? Was thinking along the lines of Colt vom Uta Tell Bastin...Sorry just making sure dont making anyone mad....I was seeing some post of people getting really angry over the name of the dog....lot different in the horse world...lol Thanks again for the help
The "vom" means "of" in German, and that "of" is usually followed by the kennel name that bred your pup.
So to name your dog Colt vom Uta Tell Bastin would sound like you were saying that "Uta Tell Bastin" would be the kennel name your pup came out of.
I don't think you'd be stepping on any toes unless there is a kennel by that name, but that's what it would imply.
And to add to what Nancy said, some breeders do have a requirement on their contracts that the kennel name be included in the pup's registered name, but if it's not on the contract then it doesn't matter.
