We have a GSP, 11 weeks. I have no doubt this subject has been gone over and over!
However, I still do not know HOW to get the "clamped on jaw" off of my hands, legs, etc! When he has my hand and he is biting, what is the technique to get my hand, leg, etc. out of his mouth? He will not redirect to a toy, until he has 'let go of my body part'. I have yelped, tried other high pitch sounds, does not work. My hands are so torn up, and my legs have bruises from where he has grabbed them! Please Help! Thank You, Debbie

Debbie, I just about healed up from my last pup and now have a new 8 week old Dutchie alligator.
Will he redirect to treats? Mine will then I can substitute a toy.
I also use gloves when she is in a real alligator mood.
When my kid goes around her she uses him as a chew toy.
When all else fails it's back to the crate until I can bandage up and get ready for more abuse.

With my pups I squeezed their snout, just behind the canines, pushing their lips into their teeth making the bite uncomfortable for THEM. It forces their jaws to open. (Not too hard! only apply enough pressure to open his mouth).
That is what I did. Unfortunatly my pup just turned 7 months and is still mouthy.

How long did it take for your first alligator to stop biting so much?
I completely understand what you mean about bandaging up until the next abuse!
I have bruises on my thighs, and today he got me on the lower part of my knee, within a minute, it was deep blue and bleeding.
Also, what kind of gloves did you use?
THANK YOU LEE!!!
Deb
Have A Great Day,
Debbie

Debbie, the treat redirection sounded like a good one to try...find what treats he loves most, and have them in your pocket at all times...and try using that to get him off...

Careful about redirecting with a toy or food. Ideally you get the pups attention with the toy/food BEFORE it starts biting. If the dog bites THEN you redirect to the toy/food you could very well be rewarding for the mouthing.
If your playing with a toy and the dog redirects on your hand, the game stops.
I have no problem sticking my finger/thumb down their throat. No verbalization such as "no" Bad dog" etc. I want the pup to think that his action created the gagging, not my correction. Just be sure to get your finger behind all the molars. OUCH!
I'm not a fan of using gloves. That can teach the dog/pup that it has to bite harder to get a response from you.
I haven't had any problems with later bite work using this method.

Hi Deb - They are white cotton gloves I got for me and my 6 year old. I got mine at Home Depot. They work great.
It gets way better after teething. Then the adult teeth are in. The biggest problem is the little baby teeth are like a mouthful of pins and needles. I've brought up more pups than I care to remember. I swear it gets better after the pup is 6 months old.
I bleed too. I'm on meds to thin the blood so it's even worse. It takes me longer to clot.
I see you are from California. You might be wearing shorts this time of the year. That makes it worse because the legs are exposed. Sweats and PJ's are a pain because their teeth stick in them. Long pants are better protection.
I think half the problem is the shock people go through. They have this mental image of a sweet, warm, cuddly puppy. They get this new pup home and as soon as he acclimates to the surroundings all hell breaks loose. Some breeds are better than others with this biting stuff. Any of the working dog breeds are a pain in the butt.

Hi Bob - I like the sticking the finger down the throat method. I've used that too depending on the physical position me and the pup are in. If you aren't in the right position it can tend to tear up your skin more while you get the mouth open.

I keep telling myself 'in time it will pass' -
I have two DVD's ordered, Establishing Pack Structure as well as Basic Dog Obedience from Leerburg. Today I watched Your Puppy 8 Weeks to 8 Months again, and its great to re-watch, Im picking up more.
Yes, we have done the finger down the throat, but he comes back for more after getting released.
Last night I did the 'ignore him and walk away' when he would bite, and I know that triggered something - like a sadness that he lost his playmate for the few minutes I was away.
I took advantage of his tiredness tonite, and he slept in my arms for about half hour! Those are the times that offset the biting.
Actually, we are near Santa Barbara, so its not shorts weather yet! Im still wearing long sweats, and as Lee said, yes, he does get caught in the fabric at times.
What part of ID are you in?
Its a beautiful state!
Have A Great Day,
Debbie
