Yesterday when my friend when out to her APBTs kennel he was listless and did not want to move. They went to an EV and was told the dog was not blocked but he could be suffering from some kind of liver damage. They suggest he might have injested something. He is scheduled for the regular vet tomorrow in the morning for blood work and tests. He is drinking but is still very shaky on his feet and vomiting this dark quite smelly liquid that even bleach does not seem to get rid of the smell. Any thoughts on this????
Call me crazy, but if this was my dog, shaky, vomiting nastiness, and listless, he would still be at the vet getting treatment. This is a very sick dog and needs immediate care and not left waiting for an apppointment tomorrow.
Please tell me he is still at the vet and this info is from the vet giving the owner an update? I have a hard time believing any emergency vet would send this dog home unless there is more to this story?
You beat me, Elaine. I was just about to post "Why is the dog not still there, being monitored and receiving support?"
Unfortunately she lives in a very rural area and the EV is not facilated for such treatment. Perhaps EV is an overstatement. When we lived in the Marshall Islands this was also the case. Very frustrating and sad.
Hello all. Well we finally found a clinic for him to be admitted to. We drove him I don't know how long to Mississippi State University vet hospital & paying through the nose - $400 just to walk in!
They said his kidney enzymes are abnomal, but it does not look like he has anti-freeze poisoning. I'll find out more later this morning & will post an update when I get off work.
Thanks Mike, I will pass on your good wishes. Her dogs are quite accomplished as Conformation APBTs, this dog in particular. He was preparing for his next show...I know she is worried sick about him, he sure is a sweetie!!!!
She got an update from his vet @ State. He said now that he is re-hydrated (vomiting took it's toll) his kidney factors look good. One is back to normal & the other is only slightly elevated now.
However he did say the ultrasound showed abnormal looking bowel, free fluid in the colon & enlarged lymph nodes in the abdomen. The vet thinks he this was brought on by one of two things
1: inflammatory bowel disease
2: cancer
She dosn't know when the cancer test results will be back so we wait.
She said she lost two dogs that presented the same way from mold poisoning with Diamond kibble..she will be getting his feed tested as well...cross your fingers
Best of luck, seriously. I don't have any advice to offer but I was feeling badly for this dog and your friend and I'm glad to know that with the rehydration at least, the dog must be a little more comfortable now. Thanks for keeping us posted.
