Hello,
My name is Joe and this is my first post on this web ring. I have recently made a deposit on a German Shepherd that should be born at the end of November and I am very excited.I am a 100% rookie at this dog stuff and I want to learn as much as possible.I do have a real concern about the neighbors dogs, as there are three per yard and after reading about how dogs "pack" around.I am wondering if this will make a problem for my puppy. Can this put a strain on my puppy as the neighbors dogs bark all the time.
Thanks for letting me post this and I hope I put it in the correct area.
I don't think you have to worry so much about the neighbors' dogs' barking putting a strain on your puppy--dogs don't ever seem to really mind hearing the musical sounds of other canids. I would worry more about the strain this must put on YOU.
As to the pack behavior... that is a valid concern with three or more dogs that spend unsupervised time together. The real danger would be to your dog when he becomes mature (puppies are generally granted great tolerance by older dogs) and might happen to wander into their territory--or perceived territory. I personally would give these dogs a wide berth--and I'd try to have a friendly chat with your neighbors before the pup arrives.
If I were you, I would limit my new pups exposure to the barking dogs, this will only lead to barking behaviour in your dog. They will bark, your dog will either run in fear or bark back, neither of which you want at 8 weeks old. You want your dog to understand that barking at other dogs is not allowed and there is no need to run either. This is impossable to teach at 8 weeks, with a barking pack of dogs at the fence. This needs to be taught with a "Known" good dog that is not agressive or dominate, to "ease" your puppy into dog manners.
So for now, keep the pup away from the "Gang"

...Thanks for all the advice. You got one thing right,I am sure having a lot of strain myself.Something strange happened to me when I exposed myself to German Shepherds. It has been a much different feeling than any other dogs.I felt connected to them when they looked at me with their eye's......very strange I know. I think I need to take a step back and not worry so much and actually enjoy the whole education.
Oceanmanus. Welcome to the Board.
Just a word of caution, some working GSD's will take starring into their eyes as a challange. Thses are not lap dogs.
