Quincy is both my first male and my first German Shepherd. I have learned TONS AND TONS here. One of my most important discoveries was not to be too quick to neuter.
I will neuter Quincy as he has a retained testicle. I was planning to wait until he was 2 yrs old.
My question is how much should I expect his personality to change as he reaches maturity?
Some worries I have:
1. Will my female boxer retain her leadership in the pack.
2. Quincy is very tolerant with my 5 pound dog. I wonder if he will realize he doesn't have to take her crap?
WOW I thought I had more worries than those two. LOL
I guess I wonder if I will wake up one day to find my sweet, laid back, easy going pup has been replaced with Cujo. (joke)
How much do males change? All my females have always been spayed before maturity so I have never seen much of a change as they aged.
Michelle,
a retained testicle is a cancer risk - the longer it's internally retained, the higher the risk becomes.
So I'd consier neutering at a year old in this case.
I had one of my dogs neutered at 2 years - he had a retained testicle (well not sure about that, when they did the surgery they couldnt find it) anyway, I didnt notice a big change in him with maturity, maybe just alittle more confident and sure of himself, he is kind of a clown anyway but I dont think leaving them intact till 2 or whenever makes them crazy "cujos"and I suppose alot of it depends on their personality to begin with, but like Will said the longer they have the retained testicle the more risk of cancer....
Thank you for the replies.
Especially Will because I was unsure when to do the neuter. The vet wants to do it now (6 mnonths) but I wanted to give him the latter benifits of the testosterone development.
A year is great.
Kathym, I am glad your boy stayed clownish. I so love Quincy's easy going attitude. He could use more confinence but I do not need two dominent dogs. My boxer is a handful.
