I would thoroughly recommend the Kong toys - these are safe for your puppies to play with and you can make them more interesting by inserting treats in the toys.
They are available in black and red - the black ones are made of tougher rubber. Not a lot of people know that!!!!
Definitely go with Kongs. All our dogs are "Kong nuts" and it's a good training tool. My wife got our dogs obsessive about them by always smearing a little peanut butter in them, before giving them to the dogs. Although the will play with other toys, if they even get the slightest glimpse of a Kong, they only want the Kong, and know that they must work in order to be able to play with it.
almost forgot, we started them with the red ones as pups, but now only use the black ones.
Thanks for info on the Kong. I live in a small town and none are available here. When I get to the city, I'll pick up a supply. How long do the red ones last?
My GSD "Blue" has a "Sport n Dog" Kong - this is his special toy that he only plays with when were out in the fields. It is bright orange with a yellow nylon type rope attached so I can really throw it a long way The colouring makes it highly visisble in the grass
We use this only when we're in the open fields - we found it stopped him pouncing on Sadie our Gt Dane X , who is now 6 year old and slowing down. He wants to play but she really isn't up to it anymore.
He is so focused on this kong that he leaves her alone and will jump over several stiles and still keep his kong in his mouth.
It is definately a good toy to get when the pups become adults
I would think Kongs are ok for pups, and most adult dogs. One of my dogs ate a Kong before I adopted her and was very sick. I have read of a couple more who also have torn pieces off of Kongs and happily most passed the pieces without incident, mind you my dog is an adult dog and also can splinter enormous raw beef marrow bones. (Ya, raw bones can and do splinter). Pups would not have the power in the jaws that she does.

Gwen Just one male Doberman puppy. Picking him up today. Going to try my hand at Schutzhund competition. We had Dobermans years ago before we had kids. Now that the kids are old enough to handle them we decided to get another Doberman pup. The whole family is excited. My daughter (8 years old) fell asleep in the puppies crate last night.
