I need a new (used)mini van that can transport 2 dogs. I'd like to use 2 500's facing the back. My present van is too small. You guys know what models can do this? I know this topic has been discussed before but there's lots of new stuff out there and I'd like to rule out any that won't work before I start looking.
Hi Lori, I have a mini-van and could not put two large crates side by side in the back also. Since I travel alot with the dogs, I wanted them to have as much room as possible, so I bought two of those portable fencing units for dogs (3 feet high)and made my own. You can put the gates where ever you want them and the corner posts are removable so you can configure any type of shape you want. I covered them with kennel flooring (grid type) and fastened it with zip ties. The top is sturdy enough to pack things on as well. I bought some large floor mats with the rubber backing to put underneath them. The total cost was less than two new crates.

A friend of mine has a Dodge Minivan and she has two vari kennel (plastic airline type) large crates side by side in the back. They sit on top of a shelf that her husband made so she can store stuff underneath and on top. The wire crates are harder to fit since they are totally square or rectangled, vari kennels are angled a bit on the top and bottom and are much more sturdy for travel. You don't want anything that will fold up or break in case of an accident.
(we had to do an extrication on a gal a couple weeks ago that rolled her Escape and she had her poodle in a vari kennel, other than being a bit scared the dog was fine.
She can then put a third crate in by taking 1/2 of the back seat out as well.
I would measure your crates and then measure the vehicles you are going to look at. That is what I did with my Expedition and when needed I can go four crates in there.

The Chrysler Town&Country and the Dodge Caravan Carol mentioned are wider. But this may be a cheaper option for you, it's a wire crate made just a little narrower. I have one for my Rott. Midwest crates
I have a '06 Chrysler Town&Country and 2 400 series crates fit side by side perfectly facing out the back. I removed the second row seats and fit a 500 facing out the driver side sliding door.
I think you could get a 500 and a 400 side by side but no way would 2 500's fit side by side.

I agree with Jason, I don't know of any vehicle wide enough to fit two plastic 500s side by side. I am going to stainless steel dog boxes in my pickup for the labs but I do live in a very mild climate so I can do that 10 months of the year with little danger of overheating and the other two aren't hunting season

I am looking into a new pickup right now and will have aluminum crates custom made for against the cab and then will be able to put two vari kennels side boy side. They will all sit on top of a shelf and there will be two pull outs underneath.
We are installing air conditioning in the rear as well.
I have an SUV which I love BUT, it is HARD to keep clean with all the traveling I do, not to mention all the cool stuff I find under the seats.... balls, tugs, bags of treats, leads, MONEY...so the pick up will work out much better for what I do. PLUS it has heated and cooled seats for summer and winter..
I so use the wire crates in my house but for safety reasons I do not use them in the car anymore.

I have a Honda Odyssey - it holds two full size crates ( I used the crates from Kustom Krates, they are sized at about the 500 series ) along with my bite suit and all my training gear.
And I carry *a lot* of gear.
Plus it's got GPS , gets good gas mileage, good front and rear AC, and is comfortable - along with the reliability that Honda is famous for.
I think it's the best of the mini vans for dog training.
