I am pretty sure my dog has Giardia. about 10 days ago we had my son's Bday at the park. My dog decided to go get a drink from the gnarly green pond that has more ducks than water.
When she goes to the bathroom it is either pudding like (in the mornings) or firm with chunks or streams of mucus (later in the day. She gets raw in the morning and kibble at night.
I took some of the more soupy stuff to the vet and it came back negative. But my understanding is that stuff is hard to see. Not to mention it is a busy vet and only god knows who floated the sample. Could be some 14 year old vet wanna be.
I am wondering if there are any adverse reactions to the treatment. I am thinking of doing it anyway just ease my conscience.

Was the sample run at the vet's office or sent out to a lab? I would agree that in-house testing can be hit-or-miss but the lab usually uncovers the nasty stuff.
Dogs can get Giardia from dirty water...they can also get other things so it would be better to know exactly what is (or isn't) there before you treat it, IMO.
FWIW, fecal cultures uncover way more stuff than fecal floats. My dog had off-and-on diarrhea for a month. Did 3 in-house floats and sent 2 out to the lab...nothing seen. Only the fecal culture uncovered the reason for the diarrhea and, once we knew what it was, the proper medication cleared it right up.
The easiest treatment is double dose Safegard/panacur/fenbendazole wormer for 3 days.
I prefer Safegard horse/cattle paste wormer in a tube from the farm store and calculate the dosage for my dogs weight.
Debbie,
TY for the advice. I will juice her with the fenbendazole for a few days and see what happens.
Sarah,
i am pretty sure what it is. Which is why I wanted to know if the treatment could be harmful. If it is not, giving a treatment that is not harmful and will cure the most likely cause as well as several other likely causes makes sense to me.
Kinda like
there is a a problem
possible causes are
a,b,c,d,e
if a treatment will cure a,c,d,e with not adverse side effects, than it may be worth it. Curing the problem can often times be more important than knowing the cause.
