My chi that I just got has Papers I am guessing this is what the lady gave me. That I have to send off to get some stuff back. That is about all I know about the paper work.
Do I have to send it off now I would like to show him but not completly set on it yet.
I am looking at it now I have some paper work from mom dad.
And some kind of table from 4 generations back.
Do I need to send that off now or can I wait tell I deside if I want to show or not.
Cause my friend said if I send my paper work off she would like to breed her chi to myne but I told her no cause I have no idea about breeding and dont want to do that at all. So thats another reason I dont want to send my paper work off. Is there a way for people to find out he has papers without telling them.
This is my first pure bred dog with papers I was just wondering
He will be getting fixed at 1 year old

That depends what papers you have. Generally if you register a dog wtih AKC you will have an AKC Registration Form that shows the transfer of ownership from breeder to buyer.
You either mail it to AKC or you can often register online at AKC.org.
If you dont register before a certain date then they charge you a penalty ($20 or so I think).
Why not register now? What reason do you have to want to wait till later?
I took 2 years to register Cujo. I just never got around to it.

there is no down side to registering. Then again if this is just a house pet then there is no reason to ever register him.

I guess the main reason I do not do it now is he is not worth anything without papers and I do not want him to get stolen.
And I dont want anyone to have a exxcuse to try to convence me to breed him I mean I wont but I dont even want a conversation about it

Nobody's going to steal your dog because he has papers unless you staple the papers to the dogs forehead. A papered dog is still worthless if they dont have the papers. On top of which, papers are evidence of ownership, so if they steal the papers and try to pass the dog on as a papered dog, it'll have your name on the papers anyway.
As for breeding, just tell them no. End of story.

AKC Registration Forms look something like this (although this particular form is a Foreign Dog registration, all AKC forms look basically the same):
http://www.europuppyusa.com/images/main/AKC-foreign-reg-1.jpg
Fill out the form and mail it to AKC with your credit card number or a check.
Alternatively if you want to do it online, visit this page:
https://www.akc.org/dogreg/index.cfm
And where it says "Dog Registration Number" fill in the registration number on the top corner of your AKC form, I believe they typically start with the letters "DN". Then follow the instructions.

Stephanie, If you bought him as a show quality dog then the breeder should be able to help you with all this. I'm thinking he is a pet dog from a local person since you are so confused about this. If you really want to show him in conformation then he can not be neutered, they have to be intact. Now you can participate in performance events, obedience, rally, agility etc with an altered dog but you will either have to register him or apply for an ILP number. For the ILP number he will have to be altered. That is assuming he is an AKC dog. As far as people wanting to breed to him Just say no. You don't have to give them a reason why.

Hi Stephanie,
I have never had a dog with papers either.
But I don't think you can show a dog if it has been neutered.
There is no reason not to register him. As someone has already pointed out, if he is stolen, the person who steals him will not have the papers so he will be worth just as much registered as not registered. Better still, the registration papers are proof that you are the owner of the dog.
Just because your dog is not neutered, doesn't mean you have to breed him. My personal stance on this issue is, and some might not agree, a dog shouldn't be bred anyway unless it has a title already (like a show championship or a working title) or it is a working dog or has something really valuable to offer the bloodline AND it has health clearances for genetic issues AND is old enough. If you will show him, and he gets his championship - and he has a really great temperament - that does not mean your friend's Chihuahua should be bred, unless that dog also has some kind of titles and health clearances.
That said - I know of a breeder near here whose dog does have show titles and health clearances (pennhip, and I think BAER), but was used as a stud dog starting at 11 months old. I'm no breeder myself, but I think that is too young to be a dad.
I'm with you - breeding should be left to breeders who know what they are doing. Doesn't mean you can't show him, and anyway showing might be fun!!! Just make sure you neuter him AFTER his show career, if that is the rule.
Edit: Lisa posted while I was typing. So I guess it seems that he does have to be intact to be shown.
