I have a problem. My 2 year old German Shepherd is having a huge problem with fleas. I live in Florida, so this time of year it is very hot and humid. I have never had a problem with fleas up until about a month and a half ago. I noticed that my dog was itching a lot and found a flea on him. I give him Frontline Plus every month. When I found the flea on him I gave him a good bath in Flea Shampoo, washed all bedding and everything in hot soapy water, and vacummed my house with a shop vac. I also sprayed the lawn with some flea lawn stuff I bought at the store. I then put some more Frontline Plus on him and bought some flea spray for dogs which I sprayed on him, and flea spray for bedding and such which I sprayed on his bedding and on the floor.
I saw some dead fleas, but then I started noticing a lot more. Now it has gotten to the point where he is itching constantly, and has lost a lot of hair on his hind legs.
What can I do? The Frontline seems to not be working. At first I thought it was because it was not reaching his belly and legs, as he only seems to be having problems on his legs, belly and feet. So I started putting drops of the Frontline on his legs. It doesn't seem to be working. It seems to help, but not kill all. I think it is so bad now that I have been getting flea bites on my ankles and legs at night.
Someone please help me and tell me how I can get rid of these suckers!
Thanks!

We had a problem like that once before and it took us calling in a professional service to spray both the house and the yard to get rid of those darn things. We were told that it usually takes two weeks for the product to get rid of all the fleas. I really like the Frontline and have always used it on my other dogs, but for some reason it doesn’t work on my current dog. I use Advantix on him and my vet recommended that I also spray him with Adam Fleas Spray to help keep the fleas off until the infestation was taken care of.
Good Luck,

Frontline stopped working out here (California on the coast)...my vet says he thinks the fleas have become resistant to it. We started using Advantage with much better results, however, I have to use it every 3 weeks, not 4.
He is trying to get me to try Comfortis, which is a prescription pill for flea control. I am still researching it...but think I will give it a try. It is month long protection and about the same price, however you have to get it from your vet. Maybe you could ask about it.
Do you have other pets? If so, are you treating all of them?

and vacummed my house with a shop vac.
This jumped out at me...where are you keeping the shop vac when you are finished vacuuming and what are you doing to empty it?
I would make sure you have a bag in the vac and make sure that is wrapped in plastic w/ a tight seal for disposal. (or spray the outside with flea killer stuff. JMO.

AAHHHH fleas....the bionic bloodsuckers! We have some serious bugs here in Austin too and I just got done bombing the house and van yesterday.....dropped the dogs off at the groomers for flea baths while I was at it and now I'm fixing to dust the outside and parts of the inside with diatomaceous earth.
My experience with the things is that you have to treat the yard area and the DE is mechanical rather than chemical so they can't develope resistance to it. In the house I vacume every other day when it's in season since the eggs are what you want to eliminate and they'll continue to hatch for weeks.
Fleabusters is a really good company since they use more natural based kill stuff........there are also nematodes you can treat the yard with if you don't mind keeping the yard damp.........we get too dry here for those to work well.
So to sum up; DE outside, bomb inside. vacume daily and treat the dog......Frontline still works better here than anything else so I focus on the environment to support its action.

I broke my hand training yesterday so I am just posting something urgent to the OP:
DO NOT put the Frontline on his legs! Follow the directions! The reason it goes where they say is so he cannot lick it.

Where else does the dog go. He can be picking up flees and re-infesting. Think about your car, the park, and other possibilities for re infestation. Flees can hide vacuuming will not get them all. Try using a flee bomb or get a professional pet control that guarantees results.
Becareful about over exposure to flee killers, depending on what kind, and how often they can effect you and your dog mentally and physically.
IMO it is generally better to a great job one time than having to repeat a poor job 5 times.

I had a serious flea problem a couple of years ago with Pepper. She was loaded.
Treat inside and out. The vet can also give you a pill that kills the fleas instantly which may help you break the cycle. I also used a flea comb for the first time in 20 years on all the dogs.
I do think it was a resistance thing to Frontline. I now switch back and forth of the products and so far no reoccurance.
If your pet goes in the car at all do not forget to treat the vehicle also.

The instant death pill is Cap-Star and it does, indeed, zap them within minutes. They fall right off.
Frontline doesn't work as well as it once did so switching around is a good idea.
Also, keep in mind that if you're on the coast, fleas like to hang out at the beach, too. I've heard so many people say that their dogs picked up a nasty infestation from playing on the sand.
