I had quit playing tug w/ my bullmastiff mix pup when she was 6 months old. Her prey drive increased a lot at that time, and I just wasn't capable of handling the reaction that I got when we played tug games.
My handling skills are improving (this pup has taught me a lot) and I'm ready to start the 'Building Drive and Focus'
I have been playing tug games w/ Chula now for about a month and am very happy with how they are progressing. (she's 10 months old)
I use an orbee on a rope or a kong wubba. I find that when we play fetch w/ a tug toy she nearly always returns it to me quickly. (as opposed to just a ball, where I find myself reeling her in on the long line quite a bit)
I know that the tug game at the end of the retrieve is a big motivator for her.
So, my question is (and I know it's been asked before) is there a down side to using this video w/ a 'pet'? My goal is to improve my bond with her, and give her a game that she really looks forward to and that will tire her out physically and mentally.
Cindy and I were just talking and she mentioned that playing tug
with our dogs also "tires" them out really quickly both emotionally and physically, so yes, playing with your dog!!
I play these games with my pet GSD (4 yo male) and he loves it. We have no problems with rank order. Maybe if he were a harder dog, or a sharp dog it would be different, but he is well balanced, and has moderate drives for a GSD. Because I was worried about playing tug with a pup, I did not do much the first year, so it took a little time for him to get with the program. Now he lives for the Orbee ball. It is great for bonding, and excercise for both of us.
