On April 13th 2008 my sons company of paratroopers returned from a very difficult and dangerous 15 month deployment in Afghanistan. 20 out of 39 men in his platoon (2nd platoon Charlie Company 2/508 of 82nd Airborne Div) were hit with IEDs.
2nd platoon spent all of their 15 months in small fire bases at 8000 feet in the mountains of Afghanistan - 1/2 mile from the Pakistan border. It was a 4 to 5 hour drive to the nearest American base. To say it was remote would be an understatement - twice Jeff went 8 weeks without a shower.
I did a short movie of the barracks they were put in when they returned - these barracks should be condemned. We as Americans should get PISSED OFF when we see this. I dont mean a LITTLE PISSED OFF I MEAN A LOT PISSED OFF.
These men just did 15 long hard months in hell for you - please watch this video and help me do something about this. Call you congressmen and give them this address for the video. Call the news media.
I have a friend who is now an active reporter and was also in the army during Desert Storm. I've just sent this to him and I will be contacting my officials as well. I will also pass this along to everyone in my e-mail list. Unbelievable.
Much as I expect our elected officials to respond to these kinds of issues, nothing gets them off their butts like a little heat from the media, and this is the type of story the media can really spotlight. I've forwarded it to several local talk radio hosts in the military-friendly San Diego area. I hope Leerburg members' efforts to get some response to this situation gets some results soon.
BTW, Nora Jones' "American Anthem" chokes me up every time I hear it.
