How horrible. I hate dog parks. No dogs should ever be loose at those places and any loose pet can attack any leashed pet at any time. I have no idea why people continue to place their pets at risk by bringing them to these parks. It is totally irresponsible for owners to continue to bring their dogs to any dog park. How many more horror stories about dog parks need to be publicized before people will take note?

She carried a small elderly dog into a dog park that obiviously had large dogs in it. Mostly her fault IMO. My mom brings Xena to the dog park when we don't have any foster pups for her to play with. Xena does laps in a fenced area as big as 2 football fields without any danger of her running away. For her it works well. This lady caused her elderly pomeranian to be killed. I hope it haunts her the rest of her life.

i don't know, i would never take teagan to the dog park for obvious reasons....she'd probably be the dog killing the elderly pomeranian....but i would feel responsible for my dog's actions, even assuming a certain amount of provocation from the small dog.
it's very sad regardless.
edit: not to say the pomeranian owner shouldn't have been more aware and/or protected her dog better. i just don't think it all lies with her.
Teagan!

Wow! I believe the death of her dog is a hard enough lesson and my hope is NOT that it haunts her the rest of her life but that she grows, learns and becomes a better dog owner. We have to understand that some people just don't have the knowledge or experience and we have to show tolerance and patience. Before I found this place I didn't know there was anything wrong with dog parks. We never took our last dog to one because there wasn't any near by but we always said with our next dog we will. How lucky I feel to have found this place and to have been taught better. I think it's our responsibility to get the information out to fellow dog owners about the dangers of dog parks. I won't chastise or berate them but I will educate them.

I have it as part of my contract that we strongly advise against dog parks and mingling doggie daycares and ask for the safety of the pets that the new owner not go to them. I can't imagine why someone would bring a toy into a place where the big dogs run except that maybe it never occurred to her that her dog could be mistaken for a prey item.

some people are trying to get a dog park opened here in our town. It is still being hashed around with the town council, where to put it, etc. I just cringed when I heard that the other day. I think it is such a bad idea, I can just see these people taking their dogs there thinking.. Oh how fun, buddy can go and play with other dogs...bad, bad, bad
I think alot of people believe their dogs are friendly and they want to play with other dogs until they actually get them around a bunch of other dogs and then they find out thats not the case! I sure hope they dont open one here

I tell you I'll never go to a off leash dog park ever again. I learnt my lesson the hard way. Before I knew any better I brought my dog into a Dog park a few times, every time something bad happened. Once she was jumped by 4 standard poodles, all before she was 4 months old! She developed DA (no doubt) and it took me months to get it under control.
The last thing I saw at the dog park was a vicious fight between a intact Large male GSD and an intact male Akita. It was brutal, they met innocently enough .. then all hell broke loose. The owner of the GSD starting whipping the Akita with a chain leash and it just made the Akita incensed. Then the Akita owner got clamped on the wrist by the GSD while trying to break it up. He was bleeding hard and bubbling from the wound. IMHO he was in danger of going into shock or bleeding out as we were probably a mile from the parking lot. I used a poop bag and a few mini pads that a passerby had in her purse to tie off the wound to get him out.
Never again .. Dog parks are a noble idea but the execution of them are poorly thought out.

I wish there were fenced in areas that were rented out for dogs to use, ONE at a time, so dogs could run and get some good exercise without having to be on a long line or in danger of getting into a dog fight. I would gladly pay for such a place. It could be set up for 15 minute increments. I'm thinking $5 for 15 minutes. I wouldn't want to pay more than that. If the city ran it, it might be a good source of revenue. Privately owned would be better.
There could be agility equipment inside for those who want to use it. I'd love having the ability to really exercise my dog. As it is, his exercise is limited to how fast I can walk or on a long line which as we know isn't long enough for any exercise at all.
