This afternoon we picked up our baby boy, Enoch. As soon as I learn to upload pictures I'll post one. He has a great temperament. My question is, is it okay to give him a bath? He has a kennel smell to him and we wanted to give him a bath tomorrow but we didn't know if it was okay. If we can give him a bath what products should we use?
I had to give mine a bath at 8 weeks when I got him. It was muddy outside, and I was playing with him at the breeder, and he was covered in mud.
I just went to the local pet store and bought something fragrance free, and non-irritating to the eyes.
He hated it. I felt really bad, he was shaking the whole time, even though the water was warm. And afterwards, he just wanted to sit there and sulk and look scared for about an hour. In hindsight, I should have waited a couple of days for him to get used to the changes a little bit.
But he's fine now. I've had to give him 2 baths since, and the last one wasn't too bad. He did struggle a bit. But he LOVED being dried off with towels. Give gratuitous amounts of treats when you do it.

The Mother, litter smell will stay with the Pup even if you give it a bath for some time. Why bath the Pup at that age just because it smells a little stale,
A chance of stressing the Pup which after all is in a strange place without its Mother and Litter mates and possible chill is not worth it, just because it pongs a little
The smell will where off, but not right away because it has had a bath
I agree with Steve. A little kennel smell is not a good enough reason to bathe the pup right after you bring him home. It's not an emergency (like Sarah's situation). So I agree with Steve - don't stress the pup with a bath.
You can also use a pet wipe to take away some of that kennel smell and it will be less traumatic to the puppy. I use 3M Pet Care antibacterial formula and the wipe is heavy duty. I use them on my dogs for those quick clean ups.

Thanks everyone. I definitely don't want to traumatize him especially since he seems to be settling in and acting like he owns everything. We just didn't know if that smell would go away or if you would have to clean him. But now that we know this is normal and it will go away we'll just wait.

How long? My puppy still smells and I want to make sure that this is normal and I shouldn't take him to the vet. I was told a dog shouldn't smell and if he does it could mean he has a health problem. It's been about a week and a half and he still smells. I'm not a clean freak at all but I don't want the house to have a "doggy" smell either. If it will eventually go away fine but I want to make sure that it's okay for him to still smell. I assume it's kennel smell but I don't know what "kennel" smell smells like. Thanks in advance.
