I have a black Lab. I have been training with the choker chain, following Ed's video. My dog, Pongo, is catching on quite well. I have taught him to sit and stay quite well, with a little bit of distractions (walking around him, and tugging on the leash). How long should I continue practicing the sit and stay command? When can I move on to the next commands?? I don't want to confuse him with too many commands. I want to train him as much as I can before we get any snow. Please give me as much advice as possible. Thank you all!!
Yup, he's ready for heeling, come, and down. I don't find that they get confused but introducing multiple exercises. The physical cues and the voice commands are so different for each that they differentiate very easily.
Ed's obedience tape is excellent. Pay very close attention to the right level of correction and praise for your individual dog. Keep it fun for both of you.
by teaching 3 or 4 commands, the dog learns to start listening to the word. if you only teach a sit, then any word you give may produce a sit because the dog has learned the behavior and not the command.
A dog teaches a boy fidelity, perseverance, and to turn around three times before lying down.
