What types of things get points deducted on a Schutzhund track besides the obvious things like not tracking or losing the track? Is absolute side to side foot step to foot step the ideal and anything less deduction after deduction?
So if he's skipping a couple of footprints on one side and then the other but keeping his nose down into the grass and the line is loose, dragging on the ground would that be considered minor?
There is nothing in the rules that stipulates a dog must indicate footstep to footstep. As long as the dog keeps a deep nose, and even that is subjective, there should not be any points deducted. You and I have breeds with relatively short thick necks, it's tough for them to actually bury their noses in the track for 300-600 paces or more depending on the track without almost lowering their entire bodies. Price we pay for cool looking dogs!

If the speed is constant and pretty methodical, I don't think a judge would deduct points for skipping footprints here and there...unless maybe you're at National level competition.
Couple of additional notes. The article should be between the paws of the dog, the dog must be straight on the track, and calmly wait for the handler to approach, must not touch the article, handler raises article above handlers head and then proceed to place article in pocket. Dog must stay calm. The
handler returns to the back of the dog, picks up the line, and commands the dog to suc, or begin tracking again. The dog must immediately resume tracking with the nose down.
Must continue in the track on a corner without changing speed, would loose points for circling.
On the last article, after showing (it) to the judge and placing in pocket, sit the dog and heel to the judge, automatic sit with the dog, and report out, saying that you and the dog and completed the track and have found these articles.
Lots to remember, especially when you are nerveous, loolooloolpo
Thanks Roni. I've only started introducing articles about a week ago but from what you just told me I havent made a mistake yet LOL. Saturday morning laying a track I accidently came straight into a large steel grate I didnt know was there so Andy did his first sharp left turn and then a sharp right turn to continue the direction I wanted to go. He stayed straight on it and continued right along no problem. I think we are getting there.
