I can't do a totally raw diet for my puppy. However, I will include a little raw meat in his diet a couple times a week. My question is what organic/all natural kibble do the people on this board like?
Russell
Try Honest Kitchen......there are a lot of posts on this topic ......of course being a computer-dunce I can't put any links up for you but if you use the search there's a ton of info on feeding pups here.
Hopefully one of the nutrition-geniuses will chime in ............Carol????
Honest Kitchen is great, but way too expensive for me. I wish I could afford it. Before I found out about this message board I fed my puppies Puppy Chow and later switched them to Iams. I thought I was feeding them the best. How wrong I was.
I add Honest Kitchen to my dog's no-grain kibble meal - it's too mushy IMO to feed it by itself, unless your dog is 15 years old and has no teeth. The no-grain kibble I recommend is Taste Of The Wild - it has a fish/sweet potato formula, venison/bison, and "fowl" formulas. The protein level is 34% which IMO is normal. Orijen and Innova EVO, are 42% protein (the same as cat food) which IMO is too high for dogs with normal activity levels.
I feed canidae...although I don't think it is organic...but it is a good food if you are going to feed kibble. I think it is pretty resonably priced for the quality of food you get too.
Also, it is on Ed's list of okay kibbles if you can't afford Honest Kitchen or if you can't do raw.
I have 3 GSD's and while I would love to feed Honest Kitchen, it just isn't in the pocketbook! And raw just isn't doable for me...
Russell, I think it will depend on what your budget is for kibble.
Canidae (IMO) is the least expensive, good quality kibble on the list that Leerburg provides. It does have grains in it, though.(but no corn or wheat...very important!)
It is comparably priced to Iams or Nutro, and you will end up feeding less of it than either, and it's better than either.
If you can pay a little more, you can get Innova, which does have grains in it, but also has better protein content (3 out of 5 top ingredients are from meat sources) than Canidae. I switched from Canidae to Innova when I started seeing some dry skin on my pup. The problem cleared up immediately.
I then switched to EVO, which I really like. Grain free, but more pricey than either of the other two. I think it's comparable to Orijen...
I alternate meals w/raw. If you will be also feeding raw, feed seperately from kibble due to different digestion rates.
I add salmon oil and vitamin E to 1 meal a day, at the rates that Leerburg recommends, as well as a dollop of plain yogurt most days.
