Since this is a police tracking site I thought you folks might find this interesting. Two convicts escaped from the Jess Dunn Correctional Facility at Taft Okla. about 9pm Sunday. We were requsted to track these individuals and arrived on scene at 2:30 AM Monday. We tracked these subjects 8 1/2 miles and bayed them up in a blackberry patch. This is the longest track we have done to date. The longest track prior to this was 6 1/2 miles. The new Garmin Astro 220 tracking devices were used and I am totally sold on this product. Anyone who runs a dog off leash could benifit from this device. I dont sell this device or personally know anyone that does.
Howard, they are Red Bone, Blk/Tan, Blue Tick hound crosses, we ride mules to stay within hearing distance of these dogs. There is no way a man on foot can stay with them on a hot track.
I'm impressed they were caught after such a long track. A dog's ability never ceases to amaze me. The only problem with this type of capture is; I usually miss hearing one of my favorite radio transmissions. Subjects in custody, roll medical.

Any behavior that is reinforced is more likely to occur again.
Thanks Terry. You should have responded to the current thread for mixed breed PSD's seeing as you guys work em.
I too like the radio transmission "10-15, stamp a CR for dog bite and roll rescue". There's always a cheer by the other road officers when they hear this on the radio. A fitting end to an exciting hunt.
This track was a gift, when we started this program there was a lot of naysayers in our department and other agencies. I cant really blame them because for years there were track dogs everywhere but an actual capture by a dog team was a rare occurance. Due to the distances this track covered a lot of different folks got to see the pack work firsthand. There were several road crossings with numerous officers actually seeing these hounds running full tilt and squalling there heads off. When these guys were brought out of the woods 8 1/2 miles from where the track started there were no naysayers present. These dogs now have earned a reputation and are well known across the state. The warden at one of the correctional institutions told me the word on the yard was that if you dont have some wheels dont jump the fence. I saw the thread you mentioned but I didnt feel I could help, it would be very difficult for a small department or civilian organization to operate the way we do.
