I was wondering how to stop a pup from pawing everytime you reach down to pet him. Specifically placing his paw on my arm. It's very annoying. Thanks!!
Stop petting him when he does this. My female is terribly licky. When you reach down to pet her, she would imediately start licking your hand. I gave her a quiet no lick command, and would not pet her till she setteled down. She still licks the air when I reach down to pet her, but she knows she won't get petted till she stops. She is a very sensitive dog, so yelling, or any type of physical correction would make her more submissive and licky.
She still licks the air when I reach down to pet her, but she knows she won't get petted till she stops Is submissiveness usually linked with a lack of self confidence? Is it a physical attempt to solicit acceptance or just a doggy way of respecting a more alpha figure? I have a three year old male that can't keep his tounge in his mouth, and if nudged away from hand licking, goes into air licking. I have not seen that before. Susan
Submissiveness and a lack of self confidence often go together, but a confident dog can also be submissive to it's owner. Licking is almost always submission/solicitation. The pawing usually is, but I've seen dogs that paw, demanding to be petted. If the dog is given a sit command, and not petted till they calm down, they will soon learn to stop the unwanted behaviour in order to get petted. With my female, I have to be very careful with any type of correction, or she will become very submissive, yet she is a tough, confident dog in most situations.
Thanks oldearthdog for the info. I will try your suggestion for witholding attention until the tongue stays in his mouth! Hope I don't have to wait for a couple of hours! Do you ignore air licks, or consider them the same as hand licks, as far as the training goes? Good things don't come easy!! Susan, (still drying the slobber off her hands.)
I rebuff any pawing or otherwise demanding behavior as well. Licking is generally thought to be submissive, but why some dogs are so manic about it, almost obsessive, is beyond me. My Lab licks, but if I push his muzzle away and say "No kisses", he stops. However, my friend's Lab cannot be dissuaded. He'll stick his tongue down your throat if you don't block him fast enough. You cannot simply ignore this behavior. She's corrected the crap out of him for it, but he doesn't stop. When he does stop making contact, he "air licks" like crazy. I don't know what it is; he's not really overly submissive or dominant. He's very stubborn about some things, like barking and licking. He does worship the ground "mom" walks on, but his behavior is not limited just to her.....if you figure it out, let me know. I'm sure my friend would be happy to know how to deal with it.
