I'm just really proud of Luc so decided to share....
I got Luc last Canada Day weekend (July 1). We had 2 straight nights of fireworks and on the second night I carried Luc part of the way home for the first time when he froze and basically shut down due to the fireworks, even though I was trying to get him home. That was back when he weighed 68lbs and I feel fairly certain we looked slightly ridiculous
He's heard fireworks maybe once since then, and done terribly. Basically I just kept him inside the house.
Today is Victoria Day, and the people across the street are having fireworks (and the drapes are wide open).
Luc isn't hiding! He started growling, and burst into one fit of barking. But between Teagan and myself, I've been able to redirect him and we worked on a little obedience before he took a nap (out in the living room).
When he started growling, Teagan came over to us and sat down calmly beside him, and he calmed down when she did that and as I started to have him do his obedience work. One reason why I love Teagan so much
When they really started w/the multi-coloured fireworks Luc woke up from his nap and got more nervous and decided to go into my room and sit under the table. I followed him and said, 'come on Luc, why don't you come out with us?' and he followed me out and has been sitting next to me. He's been watching the fireworks sporadically and is dozing off now. Teagan was watching the fireworks avidly until her butt distracted her
Anyways, I'm very pleased - what a change from a terrified dog who I couldn't move except to pick up!
He did even better - we went out for the bedtime bathroom break after the fireworks were finished, and of course while we were out there somebody else decided to start letting off fireworks in the subway parking lot 150M away. Luc stared at them for a minute, and I called him to me and he came over totally relaxed and wagging his tail!
That's awesome! Congrats on your progress! Fireworks are one thing we really don't have to worry about here, unless you take your dog to a 4th of July event. They're illegal here, unless you're licensed and have the fire Dept standing by. LOL, gotta love the desert! ::eyeroll::
i was glad to see teagan was fine with them, though to be honest i would've been shocked if she wasn't.
now i need to work on thunderstorms with luc - he's fine if we're outside or in a tent, and was fine when we had lightening strike the trail 50M in front of us (handled it better than me, i'm not gonna lie), but gets upset when he's in the house. the first thunderstorms we had though we were outside and that may be why. thunderstorms, and low-flying jets - he's fine w/regular airplanes - i don't think we live in the flight path of the airshow anymore though so low-flying jets may no longer be an issue.
but it's very nice to be able to track changes in his confidence and calmness like this - i think he's going to just keep on improving
Cool Jennifer! Nice to see Luc mellowing in his old age! So are you and your BF still coming to Brossard to see the trial? Looking forward to seeing you guys!
