I was just watching the DVD "Puppy 8 weeks to 8 months" and when Ed talked about socialization he had a group of people come up and pat the puppy as well as give him treats. I'm now really confused because I've read the article on "who can pet my puppy" and it clearly states no one unless the puppy is shy or weary of people.
So should I follow the video in letting a bunch of people pet and feed my puppy or not??? Really unsure of what to do...
Having read the article and watched the DVD my impresssion was that the socialization (petting) of the pup with the college students was an example of how to socialize a pup that was leery or slightly afraid of people/strangers. It was a little confusing in that at one point Ed mentions that the particular pup being used was in fact not standoffish around people.....but if he were.....the methods shown (petting and offering treats by the students) would help the dogs confidence around unfamiliar people. I think the fundamentals in the article Who Pets My Puppy are still valid with all things being equal (no fear of strangers).
Dave is right about why Ed showed letting people pet a pup. He was showing what to do if a pup feels threatened by people, shy or afraid. In that case, yes, you would want to show him that people are not a threat but as soon as he becomes confident around people, the "no petting" policy comes into play.
So if your puppy is fine around people and confident, there's no reason for other people to pet him. They're not part of your dog's pack and don't have "rights" to pet your pup and you don't want to submit your pup to every Tom, Dick, and Harry's petting and treat giving.
I'll sell you one of mine. 15 months old, all the drive you could want. Started on obedience, beautiful focused heel, does a very nice flip finish. Very willing to please and very tight in his focus. Starting to show a good amount of sharpness. Likes to get cocky and charge at you to bite your arm right after eating his poop in the kennel.
This is an excellent PPD prospect. When the bad guy looks down and sees poop all over his arm he will be so disgusted that he'll run away and look for something to clean it off with.
But I gather you'd prefer an 8 week old Have fun!!
Sounds like fun! other than his peculiar culinary delight... haha
I would need one from south africa because i cant afford the extreme price of flying one down from europe. Just have to do my research now for a good quality line.
