I picked up the book titled "Schutzhund Theory and Training Methods" by Susan Barwig and Stewart Hillard. I would like to hear your opinions of this book and the authors. The book was published in 1991. What do you guys think about it?
I read the book a few years ago. It has a lot of information in it for the up and coming sport dog trainer. The information is pretty solid but it was one track minded stuff. There wasn't much in the way of giving different training methods for a specific exercise.
Overall, it was a pretty good book for someone just getting into the sport.

As I recall, when this book was published in 1991 it was perhaps the first schutzhund specific book published in the USA, and possibly the first to discuss motivational methods in conjunction with the sport. I think the next was "Training in Drive", Godfrei Dildei's (sic) obedience book.
In any case, most schutzhunders keep a copy of Schutzhund Theory & Training Methods, in their library, whether they subscribe to the teachings or not. It's one everyone reads and remembers.
For me personally, there are things I do and things I throw out. It isn't a question of good or not, but a question of what works for me and the dog I have at the time.
