I've started short 1/2 block walks two times a day (mid-morning and early evening) with my 10 week old cockapoo, Charlie. He is doing well on the leash staying close to me with some enticement from yummy treats. Here's my question..he pees outside, I bring him in and hang out for a few minutes and I take him for a short walk (took us 10-15 minutes), after the walk I brought him back to his potty place...(remembering that he has to go after exercise)...and nothing..for 10 minutes. Brought him inside, was taking off his collar/leash and he peed. I brought him BACK outside and of course he was done...help! Am I doing the right thing? I am ordering the 8 week to 8 month puppy DVD TODAY! But could use a bit of advice until it arrives..any would be appreciated!
another thought was...we have a very, very tiny yard and eventually would like our dog to "go" while we are on a walk. when does that happen? i am probably jumping the gun here and should wait until my dvd arrives...but my mind is just racing with questions! lol!
Mistakes happen!! Just keep on keeping on, at 10 weeks he (and you) are doing just fine. Since you caught him in the act, you can say "no! outside!" - try and interrupt him if you can. (Yes, this sometimes results in pee geting everywhere, lol). And take him out again right away, which you did.
Whenever he pees outside, give him exaggerated praise. He won't "get it" for a while yet though, he's still really young - it's like potty training a toddler.
My 8 month old pup still gets praised for peeing/pooping - even though he's housebroken. (old habits die hard, lol)
Edit: we were typing at the same time.
A puppy at his age doesn't yet understand that there are appropriate places and inappropriate places to pee. He is just as likely to pee at the park as he is in your living room at this age. The trick is interrupting him when he goes in the house, and praising him when he goes outside. He is a bit young to pee on a walk (too many distractions) but if you were to stop and sit at a park for a while, he would probably go.
