I started Rush's training out with food at 7 weeks, to create habits on how he held his head during heeling. I basically lured him with my hand as a target straight over his head. I now need to move my hand out of the picture and we have struggled with this for a few days.
I am now using a ball under my arm, I mark with YES and reward when he lifts his head up into the position I want. This is easier said than done! (especially since he is tall now and leaps up to snap the ball) As soon as he is really getting this, I will fade the ball and start going back to food rewards or using a tug that I present over his head.

Hi Cindy,
I am with you on the training up to this point -- from luring with food/hand to the ball. Can you elaborate on the next step ie fading the ball and going back to food?
Nice recall to between the legs with the whistle -- I know that is used in ring sport, but I think I want to teach that just for fun.

Rush looks GREAT BTW!
Katie
Thanks Katie and everyone.
Katie, I can't elaborate YET! I have no idea how I am going to approach the next step....... I'll wing it and let you all know how it goes.
As always, thanks for posting your training videos, Cindy.
As an aside, I took a peek at the clicker work you're doing with your horse and it just blew me away. Very cool stuff!
Rush may have some serious competition
hi Sarah
the clicker stuff I have been doing with my horse is so much fun! Tux is motivated and really puts things together quick. Funny you should say that about Rush, I always tell him Tux is much smarter than he is!
