I live in Memphis TN where the heat and humidity make it very unpleasent. I have a shade canopy over the kennels but is there any cooling systems someone would recomend that are used for outside kennels?(i.e misting fans, etc.)
Bringing them inside is not an option due to asthma/allergies.
Basicaly you use the principle that hot air will rise and create an under pressure. This void is filled by air that is drawn from an underground tube ( 10/20 meters long and laying 1 to 1.5 meters deep. The motor of this system is a "chimney" that is constructed in a way that it heats fast. (black and with a hermetic glass or Plexiglas round it

Lorelei - I'm not sure a misting fan would be appropriate for a humid area. I've seen them used in desert climates.
When I had my now deceased Rott in the rain forest (jungle) of Costa Rica, I used a floor fan to keep him as cool as possible. The heat and humidity was oppressive.
I don't know what breed of dog you have but shade and a breeze worked for him.
For an area like Memphis if the dog has shade and plenty of water he should be OK. If you want him to be even more comfortable you could add a fan. Just make sure it's a fan rated for use outside and has a GFI plug or is plugged into a GFI receptacle. Failing that if you can find a place to put the fan where it's inside but blowing out where the dog is that will work also.
Thank you all for the input. I have found a couple of fans that are advertised as outdoor use. I am checking to see if they also mean rain included. I don't take anything for granted these days.
I just set up a kiddie pool that my shepherd LOVES. I also thought of getting one of those misting fans. I saw one that claimed it brought the temp down in surrounding area.
Wondering why it would not be good in the humidity?
My dogs live inside but love to be out as much as poss.
You can actually make a misting system for kennels realitivly cheap. Just run some PVC piping around the top of the kennels and put some small nozzles in them and hook up to a hose. You can get set up at home depot for under 50 bucks.
if you live in a humid enviorment, the misting will keep the dogs cooler but only if the temp of the H20 in the hoses is cooler than outside. Misting cools the body in the same way sweating does. It takes energy for the liquid to change from the liquid phase to the gas phase. In dry climates that energy is released from the skin as heat. In humid climates the air is much more saturated with H20 which makes the phase change more difficult thus less effective.
This also helps to explain why in humid climates a breeze is much more cooling than in a a dry climate.
