This year the flies will not leave our dogs ears alone. I grew up seeing old hound dog be eaten alive by flies and now I cant even keep them off the Rottis. We keep spraying them with Adams flea and tick spray but to me it doesnt work that well for flies.
I trully think at this point my dogs would ask for DDT if they could speak.
If there is a product yall know of that can help those poor dogs please let me know. This is just spring I have to find something before summer.

I hate using pesticides on dogs, but last year flies were terrible. I was planting flowers in the front, w/my puppy(Xander) in the back. Afer an hour I went to check on him, and the flies had EATEN a half-dollar sized chunk out of his ear; his ear was floppy already. It was the most disgusting thing I have ever seen. I got SWAT at the farm supply store and lathered all the dogs' ears in it and had no problems after that. It's also healing to the damaged tissue and stands up to hot weather and even rain. It's messy, but it's the only way to go. I was afraid his ear would never be normal, but it's good as new.

yeah, that stuff works for sure! I think I have paid all their overhead costs with all the cases I go through... between the horse and the dogs...

So its called SWAT is it for dogs or horse. The reason I ask is all the feed stores we have are mom and pop ones. Good in some aspects but bad in others I will probly have to find the company for them if they havent heard of it. Thanks for your help and if you think of anyother let me know. Also how long does SWAT last.

I have found that if you get the pink version of it, it works as long as you see it.
It does not sweat off, so a daily bathing of the are to remove dirt, etc is necessary. It is a pymethrin based formula, so it will not work on ticks (you need PERmethrin for that) I'm not a fan of chemicals on my animals, but I'm also not a fan of fly bites and infections from wounds attracting flies. It also works on mosquitoes as well. Made by Farnum, and not for puppies or cats.

It's for horses, if you're calling around asking about it. Another thing the lady I got my horse from told me about is Vick's Vapo-Rub. You have to put it on them before the flies get to them or it won't work, but if you put it on early, it works very well.

Not sure what type of flies you're referring to, but for blackflies and mosquitoes we find that powdering our dog's food with garlic powder each day works fantastic! The dogs love it but the bugs do not!
I use it on my Giants and not a single bite on them, butts, bellies or ears!

As a quick note since I saw a horrifying case of flystrike in Colorado. Please make sure you regularly check your dog's hind end if you have a fly issue as sometimes they choose to attack that most vunerable spot. :-(
Thank god I don't have to deal with that mess here.

I feed garlic to mine as well, and it works for around my house, however, once I go inland a little bit (I live on an island a block from the ocean) the insect issue is so bad during the summer that they need "more". That is when I use the SWAT on the sensitive areas to keep them bug free while hiking. However, once we are done withthe hike, I wash the stufff off as I don't want them to ingest it. The ears they can't really get to very easily, but if you put it anywhere else I wouldn't leave them unattended with it on.
