all of my guys have a pair of these for running long distances on pavement and for mountain biking with me : Ruff Wear Boots
i love these things and they are so stylin'
Keep in mind that a dog loses heat through it's feet. Too much overheating with boots on could make it hard for the dog to regulate it's body temperature...
Did you ever have any issues with overheating like RobbinMann (see post) warned about?
I guess I have to compromise a bit, but I feel that the constant pounding on the pavement should be addressed and my dogs will let me know when they're getting too hot.
Standard cordura booties will protect against abrasion on the pavement, although not the shock. The healthy natural foot/leg does have considerable shock absorbtion, and dogs are accustomed to being barefoot so they already know how to run correctly barefoot.
I run my dogs on pavement in cordura booties, from dogbooties.com.
I personally have a minor hip problem and can very quickly feel how the wearing down of a soled shoe alters body mechanics and causes me more harm that good. Too bad I'm too much of a wuss to go all barefoot, instead I replace my shoes frequently.
I like these RuffWear boots too, the ones with the great traction. I don't use them much for all of the reasons Robin and Denise stated, but if I'm going on a hike that's really rough or really ANYTHING out of the ordinary that's going to be tough on my dog's feet, I'll use them. Pavement gets HOT.
Here in VT we get sharp ice too and have a lot of road salt, so I'm glad to have the boots.
