I need some information on a GSD breeder. (Hubby said if I'm serious about wanting to do SchH, he wants a GSD instead of a Malinois. Haven't agreed yet, but I'm looking into breeders for future reference!)
I'm just 'browsing' at this point, but a customer came into my place of work with her new GSD pup. A cute female that wasn't phased in the least about being in a new place with strange people. Also wasn't bothered by the fact that my ACD was giving her the once-over when we came in from lunch.
Anyhow, they're raising her as a service dog, and I asked about the breeder. (Word of mouth is the best place to start, right?)
Has anyone heard of Abbott's German Shepherd Dogs, in Maricopa, AZ? (http://agsdogs.com/)
They look like Showline to me, but I'm not sure....
Please PM me if you have any info on them. Don't want to start a long thread on it!
That' what I've been thinking too. If the kennel's site has no mention of Schutzhund (Or ultimately, isn't 'centered' around working dogs) I consider it a show line and not what I want.
Hey Megan, I would go out to a club or two and see the dogs and meet the people that are training them. Here's a link to clubs in the southwest. http://www.southwestschutzhund.com/
I know nothing of the kennel but wanted to respond to the comment your husband made - make sure you pick the breed that suits you and your family. You can find a good working Malinois just like you can find a good working GSD. Both breed has pluses and minuses to them and you just need to figure out which breed is more suited to you and your family.
I am sure that you are going to do that but I just wanted to clarify that in case a newbie came to this thread and might come away with the idea that GSDs are the way to go in this sport :-)
Just went and looked at the site. As Mike said, that is an american showline kennel. I could be wrong but, generally speaking, most serious Schutzhund based kennels won't have a webpage titled "Love Stories" :-p
My feelings exactly! I already picked a breeder for a Malinois, but he said, "If you want to seriously persue the PPD/SchH thing, go 'old school' and get a German Shepherd."
I think I need to show him some Malinois videos! Nothing against GSD's at all. I just prefer the Mal. (Plus, one long-haired dog (my husky mix) blowing thier coat is enough! Even my acd is doing it!!)
LOL on the hair issue! Well, I think that you need to take your husband to watch a schutzhund club that has both GSDs and Malis in it and whose owners are willing to discuss the differences in the breed.
Like I said, both breeds have their assets and their quirks when it comes to training. I know of people who are long time GSD owners who went out and got a Mali, thinking that the breed is a breeze to train, only to be driven batty by some of the Mali quirks that they never had to deal with in their shepherds. Of course, not all Malis and Shepherds are created equal <shrug>
Personally, if your research of the breeds leads you to believe that the Malinois is more suited for your family, that is the breed you should get.
