I am crate training my puppy and have never let him out while he was winning or barking. I can get him into the kennel with the command "kennel" and he will go in. But as soon as I close the door he barks and for about 15 minutes and then stops sometimes until I let him out "I keep him in his kennel for periods of two hours at a time and all night long". He also starts barking about 7:00am and will not stop. I wait until he has stopped barking for about 10 minutes before I let him out. I am going on week two. Does anyone know how long?

The length of the behavior is dependent on you and your actions.

I would give the pup something to occupy it for a bit. A bone to chew on or a kong with cheese or peanut butter smeared inside. No sqeaky toys or other things that he could shred and swallow.

So far as the 7 am thing, is this after he has been out? If not he is trying to let you know he needs to go out and ignoring him for that only tells him you won't let him out when he has to "go".... you try holding it an extra 20-30 mins when you have that strong urgent feeling in the morning. It isn't pleasant.

Ok, So you think its ok to let them out when the are barking in the morning.

Read your dog, all dogs are different when it comes to crate/ potty training..

my new puppie cried and whimpered for the first two nights in his crate. i hit upon the idea of warming a common brick in the oven, then wrapping it in a bath towel, put it in his crate at bed-time . he sleeps like a log now , all night long

just wait til you get one with "through the roof" food drive and you just get done feeding him, then while in his crate, he hears you preparing food for puppies and goes nuts, screaming and howling and whining. And that's when he's 1yr old!!! our younger bitch would throw absolute screaming fits all the time if she was in the crate. One day we put her in, went out of the room and closed the door, screaming commenced, about 15mins later we thought she had finally calmed down, so my wife went in to sneak in and peek on her. Turns out the little bitch tore the door out of the crate and was sitting by the door waiting for her. Now though, she loves her crate.

15mins of barking & whining is NOTHING when you have to listen to a high strung pup do it ALL NIGHT. Get used to it.

get ear plugs, sound board, a white noise machine, move the pup into an outbuilding.

just try having two corgis. they are a breed known for vocalization. they make noises no other breed can make. and then get a shepherd pup and listen to him try to imitate corgi noises. and then move next door to a beagle so your 3 shepherds can learn how to howl........

I did the following w/my pup: She was 7 wks old when I brought her home and yes she also cried, lots at first but it was not to long before she stopped all together.....

- Her crate was in the family room so she was not alone (yep that sucked at first but it helped her)

- She was and still is fed in her crate.

- I never use the crate as a punishment

- I mixed a "little" can food with a little fat free peanut butter smeared in a kong and froze it. (it keeps them occupied a little longer - have a couple kongs pre-made-giving one). She still gets a treat for crate on occasion, in fact she will bolt for the crate and goes in by command too.

A suggestion:I would make a point in trying to get up during the night to let your pup out to prevent crate accidents which is a much harder to correct after the fact. But never the same time. (I had my pup housetrained in 2 1/2 weeks by getting up every 3 hrs 24/7 - 4 accidents total. (she is now 10 mths old w/no accidents ever since, it was so worth the investment to me and after that I then streched to 6 hrs and by 4 mths old she was in there all night as well in the day when needed.)

Play w/your pup...tire him out...that's a biggy. He might surprise you and go in it all by himself to get away from you to take a nap. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Take big deep breaths and "absolutely" ignore the crying, even in the morning otherwise you will be sending mixed signals. Never give your pup eye contact...it is enough attention to a pup who is wanting out and incentive enough to carry on longer. Cover 1/2 the crate w/a blanket to give it that more of a den feeling. (careful on the sides as they are capable of getting hold of it and chewing big holes)

Do not make a big deal when letting your pup in or out of the crate.

Patience Patience Patience.... is the key to survive the puppy stuff... It will pass, try to enjoy this little pup as it will be large tomorrow. My pup was big to quick for me :-)

That is how I did it....Yes it is trying, but it will pass.
