i have a 12 week old pup that goes way back to bernd v, leirberg. some how. my problem, is his obcession with biting at your feet when you are walking. today i was walking accross the yard, he started the usual, nipping, tripping routine. then he got above my boot top and bit really hard. i was startled more than hurt, but in a strong , commanding tone i said "no bite"
which he understands well.to my surprise , he backed up a couple of steps and started to bark at me. no teeth, nor growling, just barking. like he just discovered me for the first time and didn't know what to make of me. my question is , is this common in a puppy that has "no limit" when it comes to playing.this pup wakes up two or three times a night and plays in his crate for a while, then goes back to sleep.

Sounds like a nice pup. Try ditracting him with a toy, if that doesn't work and the biting is unbearable, grap him by the scruff of the neck and say no in a firm but not angry voice. When he stops, praise like crazy. Hang in there, my pup was the same way and outgrew it.

John, there are lots and lots of posts on this discussion board and articles on this website about that. Your pup is normal, absolutely normal. As stated earlier, redirect his bite to a toy, and don't worry about him barking at you, but remain firm (as you suppress your smiles ) When he starts to teeth big time, he won't be too interested in biting too much anymore (my experience at 16 weeks anyway) stick with soft balls and tugs then. Have fun!

Buy lots of toys. LOTS. My place looks like a pipe bomb was set off in a toy store, but I don't get bit much anymore. Those needle teeth hurt. If you just scruff him and don't give him an alternative he will find his own.

I always had my pup tied off to something. Other wise it was the same problem. Every pair of socks I own has holes in the ankles. It's definately a love/hate issue. In the beginning I encouraged it, then I created a monster.

I always used toys to get the pup off the ankles, but the pup would always take moving feet over dead toys. I kept him tied so that visitors didn't get attacked. My fear was that he would get kicked or slapped when I didn't see it or before I could get to the situation.

Hi Scott,
Like stated above, you have a very very normal puppy.
Gypsy, who is now almost 11 months old, will still occasionally go for the foot but now only when I am wearing socks & when on the phone. (I am a pacer when on the phone )
What you see is good old basic prey drive kickin' in, which is a good thing My pup is so full of it with a major sock fetious She doesn't nip to hard but I am sooooo glad those needle teeth are gone!!
My advice... wear extra thick socks! while you find that toy (that is out there somewhere) that is more appealing to your pup than your feet.
Good Luck!

Scott, just put strings on everything. I have become very good at getting my pants on with one hand and making a toy jump with the other.... all while STANDING UP!
TdPike, my 18 month old will put the drive on to my legs from time to time. Not Fun! Luckily he is a softie so if I say Phooie the world falls apart.

my most sincere thanks to all who posted. i am delighted to know that this pup is normal and will outgrow this annoying practice. i do find it hard to carry a kong around in my pocket! that is the only "toy" he shows any extended interest in, and then only if it is attached to a cord, so that he can pick it up and shake it like a rag. now all i need to do is find out what causes these @%*&$ hicc-ups. thanks again, just jt. p.s. you probably haven't heard the last of me.

These are symptoms of a BETTER than normal pup in my opinion. If you plan on working this dog, consider yourself very fortunate.
