So the time is fast approaching (end of August) There was a baby shower a few weeks ago, and last wknd we got some more gifts and also bought a stroller set, crib, etc. I've been reading Ed's articles for the last few months and feel really comfortable on how I'm going to handle everything, at least as far as my dog is concerned
I haven't really came across pets and baby stuff info though. My dog has shown minor interest in everything that's been coming in. Mainly just sniffing while I'm bringing the stuff in before putting away in the baby room (which she is not allowed in), then walking away. No excitement of any kind. Is this OK for me to allow? Should it be off limits completely?
I wanted to get some real, live opinions, experiences from members on the board. Thanks.

My own real live opinion is that the room and the stuff are off-limits. Your stuff, your baby, period.
I mean, the dog will be interested in the bags coming through, but then the bags go (calmly) into the baby's room, which is no-dogs-allowed.

Ooh, I'm anxious for this thread! I'm due July 25th and have had the baby stuff coming in too. My ACD mix is interested (she likes my nephews, and most of the clothes are hand-me-downs from them) and sniffs stuff. My husky mix couldn't care less, lol.
I've been allowing her to get a whiff, but pretty much shooing her away from everything, and not letting her in the baby's room. She's only allowed to sit in the doorway. Sounds like we're in the same spot! (Oh, and boy or girl?)

I always let the dogs check things out like you did Alex. A nice calm attitude from you is good. She knows off or leave it just like my dogs so you'll be able to control the way they interact. I also used to just wipe most of the dog hair off dropped pacifiers before I re-inserted it. That one drove my wife nuts.

Lol.. Steve that is too funny!
Well thank God I came across LB a cpl years ago. My dog is well behaved and trained and getting to the age where she is calming down a bit. She knows she's the lowest member in rank and has been great with all kids that have been over. I think things will go well.
She currently sleeps in our room on the floor, so I'm going to start having her sleep in her crate in the living room 1-2 times a week until she sleeps there every night come August.
I feel by letting her sniff what's coming in (we've gotten some used stuff too), the curiosity level goes down a bit? And getting her accustomed to the changes?
Oh and Megan, it's a boy. What are you having?
Thanks for the replies everyone.

That's my theory! I figure if they at least get to know the smell of the stuff as it comes in the house, they'll be less likely to be 'overwhelmed' by the smell of the new stuff AND the baby later. I'm allowing a quick sniff, but no touching/mouthing. (For one, I don't want everything covered in dog hair/drool, lol)
Mine's a boy too!

Having had lots of dogs and a baby, and knowing what I know about dogs I do not recommend allowing dogs to sniff over the baby stuff.
I don't even let the dogs sniff all over my own stuff, and as the boss they respect this. I just don't see a need to let this happen. It's just one more way for me to 'claim' what's mine as the leader and an extension of the ground rules that should be in place for a dog that lives with our family.

Good point Cindy! (As usual!)
How do you 'correct' them for sniffing/investigating? A simple firm 'no'?

My dogs will leave stuff alone with a word correction (my word is Yuck) but some dogs may need a collar correction or to be physically moved away.
set it up as a training exercise on leash, if you don't get results with just a verbal and practice it until your dog starts looking at you when something new and interesting comes into the environment. That is the time to give some praise and a treat, for making the right choice!
OT I don't know about any of you but it drives me CRAZY when I go to someone's house and their dog has it's nose glued to me, my shoes, my purse, etc... I don't let my dogs do this and I make it clear I don't like it from other people's dogs either LOL
a quick sniff is ok, but when they follow you from room to room and the dog's nose is like a suction cup on me and my stuff I tell them OFF... I think it's incredibly rude. Usually the dogs that do this have very lax pack structure or none at all, because their owners don't have a clue.
