First off,I just want to say that I am so happy that I finally received my Black and Red GSP.After almost eight months of waiting,I finally have a Beautiful eight week old female puppy(that was a long story!).
I had the pup now for almost two days and I'm a little worried about the amount of crying she is doing. She is not hyper by any means, just cries all day, why?
I'm asking for help on this one because I want to make sure that I really understand the principals of crate training. The good news is that she slept all night without crying or having an accident in her crate, good news, right? However, during the day is a very different story.
Do I want to positively place her in the crate during the day if I'm unable to stop my GSP from crying.I just want to do what's right.
Best Regards,Joe Cygan

I just went through this myself. Do not give in to her. I can hardly believe a month ago my puppy was screaming ALL THE TIME, and now he willingly goes in the crate on his own. Even jumps up into the backseat and loads himself in the crate when I ask if he wants to go for a ride.
The first few days he sounded like a siamese cat in heat being strangled!!!
So, yes, this is normal, the first two weeks were the worst for me. If you give in to her you will only make this whole ordeal last longer.
They grow very fast, enjoy her tiny-ness while it lasts.

Joe
As always we need more info.
You say she cries all day. and then talk about the crate.????
Yes your right sleeping thru the night and no potty is a very good thing. Most dogs try not to soil there house (her crate)
On the crate training. Put her in it to sleep at night with some toys. and maybe a little water. Alittle. Then during the day feed her in the crate and you can play withher there.ie throw her toy in the crate for her to retrieve. The idea is to make her relate the crate to nice things. She will learn to think of it as security. Call her to the crate once in a while and pet her but dont put her in it. That will keep her from thinking she gets locked up every timshe goes there.
The crying will stop at two days sheis still calling for her litter mates.
And congratulations.

My guess is that she is just lonely for her littermates. The way I read the first post is that the puppy just cries all day. NOT that she cries in the crate. Is that correct?
I would just try to distract her. Try to keep her buisy doing other things. (Like playing or training.) But DO NOT give her attention when she is crying. She will learn that crying is the way to get attention..And the LAST thing you want is a dog that whines all the time as as adult.

Something to try, it's been around since I was a kid. Take a wind up Alarm Clock(one that's loud ticking)wrap in a towel, place in crate with pup.
A stuffed animal similar in size in crate will also help.
Get all the sweet puppy breath you can while it last. They grow up quick!!!!!!!!!!
Hope you enjoy your pup as much as I have mine!

Joe,
A way to stop a behavior is to ignore the behavior in time it will go away. As long as the puppy is healthy and it’s basic needs are provided, it is safe n the crate. To get past this phase, you must not give into your emotions.
It is a mistake to yell or respond in anyway. Displeasure is attention and so it reinforces the activity of crying.
Buy some ear plugs and have fun...

In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi-human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog. - Edward Hoagland |

Thank's everyone for you help.I really appreciate your time in my time and need, thank's!
I'm glad to hear that this sounds like some typical behavior.I seem to be on the same page as you guy's and I look forward to seeing this pass.
I'm pretty amazed how smart the GSP breed is.I have never seen a dog learn how to go to the bathroom outside so quickly before. Then again,I am very new at this stuff.
Thank's again for the rapid responses!

i went threw it too with mine, i really did use the earplugs and i even turned up the radio and tv loud enough, that it made her stop crying. the more you ignore her, the faster the crying goes away for sure.

I always put puppy in the crate with a stuffed animal. The clock is also a good idea, like mom's heartbeat. The stuffed animal gives puppy something like a litter mate to snuggle up to. Have fun with your new baby.

No soft toys please people !!! They are really not worth the heartache...
