I'm going to be getting a high drive working gsd shortly and I plan to build a run in the back yard to keep it apart from the other 2 dogs when I can't supervise.
I'm still not sure where the best place for it to sleep is? In my bedroom in its crate or in its kennel run. The other dogs have been raised as pets and sleep on a rug in the kitchen. I don't think this will be safe to try add the new dog to this routine at least for a few months. I would feel quite guilty if the dog is kept in the run when i'm not home as well as when i'm sleeping...
What are your opinions?

Dogs do better IMHO being with the family. It's also easier to raise a puppy if it's been crate trained so I vote for the crate in your room.

We tried having Max in a different room when we first got him. He was taking forever to settle down at night until a friend suggested we put the crate in our room. So we did and the crate training went so much easier, he settled down almost immediately when going to bed at night.
Then once he got used to the crate we were able to move him back to the other room.

I have always loved the idea that the crate is in your bedroom because they like to be near you and I feel it does strengthen the bond between you and the dog. I am sure it is completely personal for every person, but my vote is for next to you in it's crate in your bedroom. Especially if it is a house dog.

2 dogs, 2 crates, master bedroom. I like to hear whats going on with my dogs. It's saved me on countless occasions from cleaning up all sorts of various messes coming from all orifices.

2 crates, side by side in master bedroom. Easy to tell if they need to pee (they seem to start panting if they are holding it) or if they get sick. Plus, it seems to keep them quieter.

A new young, weened puppy sleeps in a crate in my room. After the pup is old enough to not be shreddy and chewy, I allow the dog to sleep on a dog bed in my room, provided I'm not having any dominance issues with the dog.
I used to let some of my (older, respectful)dogs sleep on the bed, but I have a 'thing' with dog hair in the sheets and one of my (80 pound) dogs got in the habit of sleeping on my head, so I put an end to it. I like having my dog in the room though. I wouldn't leave a dog to sleep outside.

He was sleeping on a pillow bed in our room near our bed. But after some serious aggression issues he's now in a crate in our basement. We've created a safe haven down there for him, and I think it's been an important step in helping us gain control of the situation. Our last dog slept in a crate in our room. I guess it all depends on the situation!

Bruiser was in bed with me until I started having issues with him.
Now phoenix in her crate in the office.
And bruiser in his crate in the living room.
No animals aloud in our room any more.
Due to sheets getting torn up or what ever.
And my two seem to sleep better out of our room.
I have insominia (sp?) so I toss and turn all night long

I'm down to one dog, but used to have three. Now, it's a dog bed on the floor in my bedroom, in the corner of the room.
Once they're housebroken, of course, and assuming I'm not having issues. If that's the case, it's in a crate. Crates are in the bedroom.
(Side note: Ivan, my previous Siberian Husky, managed to figure out how to open his crate door. I'd leave it unlatched, and when it was bed time, I'd give him the "house" command. He'd walk up to the crate, pull the door open with his paw, walk inside, and pull the door shut behind him. I have NO idea how he figured it out, and I sure didn't teach him, but it was pretty cute when he did it.)
