comments please, i found an old book at my public library, entitled"the koehler method of dog training". my question is should i adhere to this book and all its methods, or have some of these older methods been upgraded to a simpler form? also are there any parts that dont hold true for training a gsd pup?
The koehler method is a very good way to train! with all dog training every methods doesn't work for all dogs.In my experience in training other people and there dogs the koehler methods seems to be consistant,if you have a shy dog after the long line work, you will need to pick the pace up with some motavational reward systems, i.e food, toys, praise, etc. just follow through with what ever you start till you get the hang of it. And read, read, read, first! good luck <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
Koehler is considered outdated b/c of what we have learned about learning theory since his day. The training is based on force and complusion, ie the dog performs to avoid punishment.
Whatever your goals are, good training is more balanced than what Koehler tells you. Contrary to what the purely positive crowd preaches, he is not the anticrist. Just very outdated and not sound training.
