Yesterday I was in the car w/Kodee, and we saw an ambulance going by in the distance. I got to thinking about "What happens to you dog if you get in a serious car accident and have to be taken somewhere by ambulance?" I mean, what's the protocol for this, or is there one? Do they take your dog (assuming he's not injured) to a shelter (heaven forbid) until someone can come get him? Do they call a family member to get him, and if so, what do they do while they're waiting for someone to show up?
Also, what if both you AND your dog are seriously injured? What happens to your dog if he needs to be seen immediately by a vet?
My dog is restrained in the car w/a seatbelt harness (a good one), but I still wonder how these situations are handled...

Animal control would take charge of the dog until someone was contacted. He would either be held at the city or county shelter until someone arrived or given a lift home by animal control.
Likewise, if your dog was seriously injured he would be transported to a vet for treatment. That's how it is handled here.

I have cards that usually go on the crates with:
name of dog
my name and title(s)
address
contact info
who to call in case of accident
temperament
I also have a laminated sheet with all the info on who to contact to come get the dogs as well that sits in my dashboard.

Thanks. I just found a Release for Medical Treatment form for pets online. I am going to put one in my car, and another one in my wallet, I guess. I've been looking online for a form re: who to have come get the dog, etc, but I can't find one. I'm sure there's one someplace, but if I can't find one, I'll make my own. I think I'll attach a copy of his rabies certificate, and put his Avid chip # on it as well.
Kodee rides with a harness, rather than in a crate (I can't fit a crate in my vehicle along w/3 kids in booster seats, so he has to sit up front w/me), so I can't attach anything to a crate, unfortunately. I think I'll clip my form onto outside of my visor, so that it's easily visible (hopefully), if we have an accident (heaven forbid).
I may also see if I can find one a large luggage tag that I could keep attached to his harness, and put the folded sheet of info in there. Then it would be attached to him directly (if I can keep him from eating the luggage tag).

You're awesome Carol!
Not only is this peace of mind for the owner, but in the event of an actual accident, I'm sure all emergency workers would be thanking their stars that someone actually took the time to make everything so clear for them - not sure many people are so prepared (I'm not! but I will be now ).
Thanks for reminding me of this obvious but probably often overlooked extra effort we dog owners can make to ensure our animal's safety & security.

Here is a video showing different dog restraints
I felt pretty good about seat harnesses until I saw this. I have always used hard travel crates and this show why you should

We call animal control if the passengers in the car are unable to state a preference. We will call a relative or friend if the situation is such that it can be done.

I want to add something here about releases of information...
what you or I would think is worth spending for a dog to be operated on, many vets and animal control officers would not. Some vets that I have talked to (I'm a paramedic, and I have actually had to deal with this exact situation) wouldn't do a lifesaving surgery without the owners' consent, and if the owner is unable to make a decision in a timely manner, the dog is euthanized. Just something to keep in mind when filling out a consent for treatment - you are authorizing them to make a decision FOR you as to what is best for your dog. If they are in the crowd of broken leg - put it down, get a new dog, well you may end up with a horrible situation on your hands when you come to get your dog.
For the record, I have transported one dog by ambulance with the patient, but usually that is not the case. It was a k9 officer who was in an auto wreck, and both he and the dog were injured.
