If something related to this is already posted, please let me know (I searched with no luck). Our GSD has a skin rash about a month ago and I took her to the vet, he of course gave antibiotics and it went away. Well it is now back. FYI, we just started a raw diet, swithced cold turkey from eukenuba, feediing ground turkey and hamburger for the first two days and feed chicken quarters and an egg last night (that is fun to watch!!). Anyways, the rash is 3 red spots (doesn't look like typical ringworm, no missing hair). One spot on each leg, in the same spot. and one little spot on her belly.
Question is, could it be from switching her food (detox)? I don't want to pump more antibiotics into her unless it is the smart thing to do. Any opinions?
Thanks,

Antibiotics for "puppy rash" he gave a scientific name but I don’t remember what it was, but can find out. He did not do much, just looked at it and prescribed the medicine.
Thanks

You have to tell us the diagnosis. Did the vet do a scraping?
What did the vet prescribe (exactly)? If you don't have the diagnosis, can you can and just say "I forgot what Dr. Smith said; what was this rash again?" and post back.
I'm not a fan of overusing antibiotics at all, but we have no idea of whether or not there really is an infection.

Oh, sorry; I missed this.
Yes, can you find out and post back?

I guess it was not too scientific, a mild staff infection, no scraping, (he said it was very common?) He prescribed Cephalexen (sp?).
After thinking more about it I have another idea. She has been playing pretty hard the last couple days, running after her orbee and wiping out on the gravel and running over fallen trees, maybe it is a little "road rash" and I worry too much. She is my first dog!
Maybe we should just keep a close eye on it over the next couple days. I just dont like to pump my dog full of drugs she doesn't need. When I called the vet they said they would refill it for me (sounded like they didnt want to even take a look) Maybe it is time to look for a new vet clinic. My options are extremely limited, only 3 in the area. I bet they would blame it on the raw diet

Connie, thanks for the links. Her rash is not itchy at all, I have been with her all day since we started the raw diet (except at night). The rash does not look like the one described in the link or any other thing I have read or looked at. I dont think the vet diagnosed it correctly.
Thanks again

I'd want a vet who looked more carefully. If he thought that it was a recurring infection, then I'd expect some attention to the underlying cause (see below). Bacterial skin infections are hardly ever primary, from all that I have read.
QUOTE from http://lowchensaustralia.com/health/skin.htm
Diagnosis
- This is usually made from the case history and appearance and location of the lesions. In some cases, it may be necessary to culture the skin (grow the bacteria) and conduct sensitivity tests to determine which antibiotic will be effective in treatment. Most bacterial skin infections in dogs are secondary to another disease such as parasitism, allergies, endocrine (hormonal) disorders or abnormalities in the immune system. Therefore, in recurrent cases, it is important to search for underlying causes. It may be necessary to do blood tests, allergy tests or skin biopsies to achieve a complete diagnosis. END

And re-prescribing antibiotics over the phone in this case doesn't cut it for me.
