I bought some beef ox tails today on sale, but I have never given them to Kodee before. I am assuming they are ok for him to have, but are they considered a RMB, or recreational? (The ones I got seem to have quite a bit of meat/gristle on them, but I'm still learning about how to feed raw.)
I have a 16 w/o Presa puppy (40 lbs now) who is a big time gulper. When I gave her an ox tail section about 1 month, she wolfed it down in one swallow. (I panicked and posted about it on this forum). My solution (suggested by someone here) was: buy whole foot + long sections of the tail rather than the butchered smaller segments--worked well.
Ox tail is considered a delicacy here in Hawaii. There's even a restaurant that serves primarly ox tail soup. The ox tails here have quite a bit of meat on them.
Randy--Beef ox tail is just the tail of a cow. It's a substitute for real ox tail which is not widely available.

LOL - I was wondering the same thing, but I just assumed it was cow tail. No one around here eats ox.
Must be a delicacy around here, too. The things are normally $4.00/lb!!! Kodee won't be getting them again, I don't think. I was a nervous wreck watching him eat his first one ever. It was the perfect size to suck into his throat in one piece, from what I could tell. He managed to chew it up and eat it, but it was a nail-biter there for a minute...
I must be simple, why don't they just call it beef tail or cow tail or better yet, just something good for your dog to eat? For crying out loud.....Beef ox!
So is the cut of meat used in the same way as Ox tail?
If I'm not learning, I'm not paying attention.

I just ASS-U-MED that they were the cut up sections of tail. Your suggestion is the perfect fix for the question, "Will my dog try to inhale this?".
Kori, if your butcher cuts them in the store, then ask for them un-cut like Eric suggested. It won't be such a nail-biter when fed that way. Chances are that they will also be cheaper since the butcher doesn't have to do any extra work to them.
