Hi,
My switch to raw feeding has been going very well. My dogs all love it! (However my 25 pound puppy swallowed a whole chicken thigh and started to cough it up, scared the crap out of me.) I now hold the larger pieces of RMB in my hand and make her chew it, instead of swallowing it whole.
I found some frozen pig ears at the supermarket. I have read they can eat pigs trotters (what are those?) and pigs heads but have read nothing regarding the ears. If they can eat the frozen ears are they considered recreational?

Are they unsmoked? Just straight ears? I've never seen them! I've seen the smoked ones (not so good).
I'd probably use unsmoked unflavored ones for recreational chewies, supervising the first time.
I'm glad that it's going well!
P.S. Dogs are good at ridding themselves of problem items at one end or the other.
If it's the front end, they generally just give it another try.

I wouldn't worry about holding it for them to eat. They figure it out, really. Every meal there is at least one piece of something that my dogs try to swallow whole (thus the reason Ivan gets completely frozen meals now, it's the only way he will chew)
If the dog can eat it in one sitting rather quickly, it's food. If they lay down and chew for an hour or so, it's recreation.

Connie,
The ears are unsmoked, I guess their straight, I haven't taken them out of the package yet.
Cameron,
The thigh was partially frozen and she swallowed the whole darn thing! She didn't chew it even once! If I don't hold it in my hand should I try to give it to her completely frozen? I have never seen a dog eat so quickly, she is like a vulture! It makes me very nervous.

Please post back about how long they last, etc.
Was this in a regular grocery store, BTW?

Thigh or leg 1/4?
You weren't hovering close enough to make her nervous, were you?
Big dog? One time wouldn't deter me. This is gonna have to be an every day, or at least every other day, problem before drastic measures are taken.
If something is swallowable, they swallow. Sometimes, regardless of size, ground food, or whatever, they will try to chug it. If it doesn't go down.....it comes back up.
It is scary sometimes, though.....You just have to give 'em the benefit of the doubt that they know, or will learn how to eat.

Connie,
I got the pig ears at a regular grocery store, it was not a chain store though. I got 40 pounds of chicken necks from there also for $16.00. I thought that was a good deal. I will feed them tommorrow and give you an update.
It was a chicken thigh. I do have the leg quarters, I have not fed them yet. Hell yes I was hovering. I don't think she even knows I am there though to make her nervous, she is so enthralled with her meal. She is a American Bulldog puppy, 5 1/2 months old and weighs about 28 pounds. My fear is it won't come back up and she will choke.

Ain't that the truth?
There is nothing like a dog's reaction to real food.
I have probably mentioned that I have a senior whose body vibrates, and who makes an unconscious (I believe) high keening/moaning noise in the back of his throat while I prepare the bowls.

Lisa,
I've seen the trotters in the store, as well. I think they're pig's feet? I've wondered if they're good to give...the hard hoof part makes me a little leery.
True

Just take note of it next time. They will ALWAYS be more excited about meals than they were with "dog food", but they should get over it a bit...hell, who am I kiddin'?
I wonder about the ears, being skin, fat, and cartilage, causing digestive upset. Feet, too.
If there is diarrhea afterward you'll know why. Don't think it will hurt to try, though.
Sarah, feet are fine. Very boney, but fine. It would be better to find the feet un-split. Most of the time in the store you'll see them cut down the middle. Takes some of the fun out of it.
