hi folks
We have a new puppy we'd like to add to our pack. There's my wife, myself, and Bosco our 100 lb lab/hippo mix.
My wife wants to have the SAFER test administered to "Espy". When we first brought her in to our home, Espy, who's a shep/lab mix, less then a year old, bared her teeth and snapped at me when I tried to remove her leash from her mouth. (she was gnawing on it.) My wife doesn't want an aggressive dog in the house.
Bosco and Espy get along fine with a few corrections administered by Bosco.
Any thoughts about the SAFER test?
Thank you,
Chuck, Elaine, Bosco and I hope, Esperanza

Chuck,
What is the background on this dog? Where did you get her? Know anything about her past handling?

background. from what we've been told by the fostering people, she was a street dog, then taken to a pound from where she was rescued. She was adopted but kept outside, away from the kids in the adopting family. They sent her back to foster, from where we got her. She was crate "trained" more or less.
this is Espy (name Roxy here)

also she is used to, or responds well to a prong collar. I finally know a little more about how to use it, thanks to this site.

She is a good looking girl....
I would start with groundwork. Sounds like she was left to fend for herself or allowed to do what she wanted.
That can be fixed as long as you start being the leader and keep it that way.
Here are a few e-books that are great....
Groundwork to Pack Structure
Introducing Dogs
Theory of Motivation
And some DVD's that will help as well....
Basic Dog Obedience
Establishing Pack Structure with the Family Pet
Just a couple so far, but this has to apply to your wife and her dog as well. Everyone in the house ideally should be on board.
Doesn't sound like she is a real aggressive dog, but she sounds like she is willing to test boundaries to see how far she can get.

thanks! She's a real sweetheart and I know she'll respond well.
We _have_ to have the SAFER test administered as my wife won't have it any other way. So that'll be done tomorrow at 10 AM. I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks
Chuck

The only thing is, and this goes to your wife more than you, is that there are SO many dogs that lose out on a great home, or worse their lives, because they are thrust into these tests with strange people, surroundings and what not that it is really sad.
I always try to explain it like, think of you were thrust into a strange situation to where you were not sure what was expected of you, how would you feel? Dogs do not think and rationalize like humans do, they live in the moment and react to things the way they know how. It is up to handlers and owners to teach the dog what we behaviors we want, will allow and will not allow. Not some test.
Wanted to add that I understand where your wife is coming from to a point, and I am not saying that you should argue about it at all. But at least give the dog a chance to settle and learn the rules.

Chuck, the safer test is completely retarded, save your money, that test is by people that don't know about dogs and is swayed by the tester. Hopefully all my dogs would fail, lol.
The test is yuppie crap, especially the food thing, RETARDED!
