I'm asking this question on behalf of my mom, who has a 9 month old Havanese pup (she's about 8 lbs or so). She LOVES to chew, and her favorite toy is a Nylabone keyring (a small one). She literally chewed all the keys up in a matter of a few weeks (starting when she was about 3 mos old or so). My mom bought her a new one, and she chewed the end of a key off in about an hour. Needless to say, she's eating the Nylabones so fast we're concerned, so my mom stopped giving her the keyring. She bought a bigger Nylabone (not sure which one), and Maddie is doing a number on it, quickly. I asked my mom to try the ones marked "for powerful chewers", but she said that's what she got last time.
Besides Nylabones, is there anything else she can give to Maddie that would be safe for such a small dog? We know we can't do rawhide, but this dog seems to need to chew on something. She's very good about only chewing on her toys, but we don't want her comsuming so much nylon shavings. Any suggestions?
Hi Kori - those Everlasting Treat Balls are awesome. I got two large ones for the Bulldog and the puppy and they're attacking them with gusto. They spring right back and not so much as a chip comes out of them. I don't know how small the small are but I'd definitely try one. The little hard top on them is great, too. My dogs are in a zone when they're working on 'em.
I've had good luck with the Red Barn tendons I found at Pet Extreme. Dante's had the same one for almost two weeks and it doesn't turn into a gooey choking slab like rawhide. The thing looks like dried flank steak the more he works it.
