Okay, so you know what litter you'd like a puppy from. You live quite a distance so can't go visit the litter before weaning.Gender and color don't matter...how do you select your puppy? Aside from getting information from the breeder about what he/she saw as they grew, what do you like to see for yourself?
It depends on what you plan to do with the puppy. If you want a working dog, than you would choose a pup based on drive and nerves. If you just want a good family pet, then stay away from the alfa puppy(they can be difficult to deal with if you don't know how). tell the breeder what you are looking for and how dog will be used. A good breeder will assess the puppies and can tell you about the personalities and drives. Stay away from breeders that will not do this.
Sorry I make assumptions that everyone here would just look for a working puppy. Anyway, it would be a schutzhund puppy for an experienced handler, not just sport, but serious also. I'd look for a bold puppy that will explore, come when you call it, with a full grip, very interested in the toy, not over excitable.
I trust the breeder, in fact this would be my 2nd pup from them. Last time the had a couple of pups they would recommend, one of which happened to be my pick. Just curious what others look for when they look at a litter.
Bernhard Flinks has developed a modification of the guidedog selection testing that does a great job of testing a dogs gentic potential. The test is done at seven weeks by the buyer in a neutral location without the breeder present. It takes about 5-10 mins per puppy. If you are going to pick up the puppy at the breeders, I'd learn to administer the test.
Ed has a quick description of the test on this board under training articles "Puppy Selection Testing", give it a read
