I'm experinced with GSd's and K9 work. I no longer work with law enforcement. I'm going to purchase a new GDS puppy. I would like to train his in SchH but, I also want him as a protection dog??? What do I ask the breeder to look for when choosing a puppie for me.
Thanks in Advance
Dawn
The most important part is finding the exact type of litter you want, out of good working dogs who all do SchH. I also see the parents of the dog work, etc. The breeder, if they have trained dogs themselves and raised puppies, should be able to select a SchH prospect out of the litter as they are growing up. Looking for fast recovery time, boldness, bold when separated from the litter, good prey drive, etc. Some puppies in the litter will be more dominant, that is not good or bad, depends what the owner is looking for. I think if you want to train, compete and title the dog, that is more important than asking for just a "personal protection" dog, since the majority of working breed dogs can do PP if you mean street protection type things. If it's distance, see a video before choosing a puppy. Maybe take a look up Volhard puppy aptitude test to give an idea in things to look for in a working pup.
Thank You for your advise. I think I have found the breeder that I'm going to use. I have checked them out as much as possible on the net. They seem very nice and knowledgeable about working GSD's. They seem to have excellent references and they are not over priced. They advertise that every puppy sold comes with a Leerburg training tape: Your puppies 8 wks to 8 months.
The problem for me is that I have never bought a GSD over the internet and I'm very leary about the whole process. Do you have any advise I could use? Can I post the name of the breeder on here to see if anyone has had experience with them ( good or bad)
Thanks,
Dawn
