I can only tell you my experience. I have raised 4 german shepherds. The first three all had what their vet recommended in terms of vaccinations heartworm etc. They always had something wrong with them. The last dog we had had only what the breeder gave him and a one year rabies shot and nothing else. He was never neutered either. He was never sick a day in his life and at 9 years old ran and played like a puppy.
At ten years old he started to develop testicular cancer. At 11 years old he developed degenerative spinal disease. With the aid of some medecines he was able to ward off the disease for 3 more years. When he lost the ability to get up un assisted and had bowel movements while laying down, and his testicles had grown to the size of small grapefruits it was time to end his suffering. Now a month later I would still give my left arm to have him back and not suffering. He was the best friend I ever had. We had developed a deep spiritual bond. If I could take his place and he return a young pup again I would. When he was gone I actually became suicidal and came close to joining him but having a wife of 35 years and 2 children kept me here. And as he went to be with the god of my understanding I sang him the song I had sung to him so many times. " You are my sunshine my only sunshine, you make me happy when skies are grey, you'll never know dear how much I love you , please don't take my sunshine away." Just my experience but my new dog will only get what the breeder gives him.
Peter, thank you for having the guts to be honest about how hard it was to lose your dog. So many people down play the pain and depression that can accompany the loss of your best friend.
Too many times we hear, "it was just a dog". Not to those of us who loved them. I have loved my dogs more than many human friends I have had.
I am very sorry for your loss, but I am glad you were able to fight back from that pit.
Peter,
My deepest sympathy goes out to you from the bottom of my heart, for the loss of your dog.
Tears came down my cheeks as I read your post. Bless your heart for pulling through such a difficult time.
Take good care,
My deepest condolences to you for your loss of your wingman, Peter. My heart goes out to you and your family, and I empathize with your pain.
Take whatever time you need to grieve for your lost friend. And when the time is right again, you will find a new companion to journey along with once more.
