what a disgusting situation to put your best friend in (not to mention the wife and child left behind)... why on earth would someone take their dog with them into the wilderness knowing damn well they wouldn't be coming out ??

That's something that would stick in my craw as the investigating officer.

Yeah that is a good point. Unfortunately suicides never do make much sense because by the time someone gets to that frame of mind they are beyond sensible thinking. What is really sad is that once someone gets to the point they are willing to kill themselves they are convinced nobody would care if they do. Possibly if he knew his dog would do that for him he might have rethought doing it in the first place and sought help.

I have to agree with Matt. When someone has gotten to the point where they are suicidal, they cannot reason rationally. They cannot reason at all. Every moment and thought is filled with the knowledge that they don't want to live any more, and they are convinced that everyone will be better after they're gone.
Depression is a terrible thing....
And It is almost impossible for those around them to see the signs.
And the dog remained loyal, and protected him, even in his death. Maybe that's what he was hoping for in some twisted way. That she would protect him until he was found. How much worse would it have been on the family if he had been "scavenged".

My experience with suicides has actually been to the contrary.
I've had suicides go out of their way to avoid causing additional paint to those around them, and even to the First Responders. Responding to the scene, it was clear that a deliberate effort was made to minimize the trauma to whomever found the body.
Which makes me think there is some merit to the thought that he may have wanted to keep scavangers away.
Or another thought is that he may have planned to "take the dog with him", but didn't have the heart to do it when the time came.
