If you have a multi-dog household, are crates considered "interchangeable", or does each dog have his/her crate, period?
My two dogs each have "their" crate. Strata, the puppy, was always scolded for going into Tessie's crate, and Tessie could barely fit into Strat's crate if she wanted to! But for people w/ similarly sized dogs I could see how it might be an issue. What do you do? I'm just curious.
Each of mine has his own crate - I've actually never had to enforce it, they just stick to their own. When they want to lay together, they use one of the dog beds.
My dogs have their own crates, except for Shyner who has a rug. They go to their crate automatically when I have their food bowls and when I grab my car keys
The puppy actually had a huge fit when Paul accidentally put her in Caterina's crate Normally silent, she HOWLED til I found her and put her in her own crate. She then settled down and went to sleep.
I think they think of their crates (and Shyner's rug) as their own room or their space that the others can't invade.
Mine have each always had their own crate. Other than a quick sniff from time to time, they've tended to actively avoid each others' spaces. If they didn't, I would step in to prevent them from 'trespassing'.
Our two dogs also have their own crates (Nickie's is the plastic type and Roxie's is all wire). Occasionally I will see Nickie sneak over to Roxie's empty crate and sniff around and one time he pulled her Kong bone out to the living room to chomp on. Other than that, they both run to their own crates when I announce "Crate".
very much separate. The crates are side by side, but each dog prefers their own crates it would seem. They voluntarily go to their space, and they really never have gone into the other crate. In fact, whenever the boxer goes past Ivan's crate to get to hers (whether he is in there or not) she lowers her head and tail to walk past...
When a flower doesn't bloom, you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower.
My JRT has a crate in the house. He's only in there when we leave.
My two GSDs are in the same kennel run attached to the garage. Inside the garage is a pen just large enought for two dog houses. Neither dog shows a preference for one over the other but the older dog likes to lay on top of one house when I'm in the garage working.
