If so, what do you think of it?
I need a slightly bigger crate for one of my dogs- his original crate was a freebee from someone at work; the wire is getting rusty in places and the pan is cracked all over... past time to get rid of it.
I'm leaning towards another wire crate (I need to be able to fold it up) but saw the soft-sided 'travel' ones and wondered what they were like.
Thanks!

The soft sided crates won't hold up to a dog that has any inclination toward chewing or going nuts in the crate. A dog that otherwise does nothing but lie there is OK, which is what they are intended for.

A soft-sided crate is the greatest thing ever for dog showing. They are light, easy to pack up and carry around, and provide a more covered, darker, place to put your dog at a show. That said, they were meant to be used in a supervised environment, like a show, where you are either sitting right there or someone else is sitting right there. The only reason dogs stay in them is that they are crate trained and aren't going to challenge it. It takes only a few seconds to get out of one for the more determined dog.
If you are looking for home usage or have a more wound up dog, go with another wire crate.

I use the soft sided pop up crates for traveling with the dogs. They are so much easier to carry into the hotel room and fold down to about the size of a large dinner plate. I pop them open and the dogs crawl right in. I don't even have to zip the door closed. Wal-mart carries them here for around $25.

The few soft sided crates work exceptionally well with my well crate trained dogs. I can carry them around looking like I'm carrying a really full gym bag in the case of my toy dogs. With Large dogs you really can't and shouldn't try to move them inside of these things, it just warps the frame and puts stress on the fabric.
Like others have mentioned though if your dog does decide he wants out... in a soft sided crate he will get out. They are also a little more difficult to clean if your dog has a messy drippy accident.

He mostly just uses it to chill out in- I can't remember the last time I actually shut the door!
I usually cover the bottom with carpet samples from work... free, I throw them away when dirty, and there are ALWAYS more, lol.
His only bad habit is 'digging' as he's settling down for the night... I figured if I went with the soft side I'd have to get a pan for the bottom anyway.
I think I'll probably go back to wire and just cover the top for more cave-like feel. We don't travel all that much, and we do the doggy-seat-belt thing rather than traveling in crate. Vehicle's not big enough to have two erected crates in together.
Thanks for all the replies!

One of the guys from my club uses a soft-sided crate at the training field. He drives a car, and it's easier for him.
He'll probably be getting rid of it soon, because as his dog progresses in training, he gets too excited and it likely won't be too long before he is bouncing across the field in it.

Phoenix has a softsided crate 24 7.
I paid a pretty penny for it but she just sleeps in there and I still travel with her.
So it easy but she uses one in the house she loves it and as everyone else said.
If they chew not a great idea

If your dog isn't 150% calm in a crate, DON'T get a soft-sided crate.
A lot of BC owners get soft-sided crates for their agility dogs. Suddenly there are dogs rolling the crates around like hamsters in those plastic rolly balls. (Yes, it's as entertaining as the picture in your head suggests!)
I saved and saved a few years ago to get one for Tessie, not realizing the extent of her anxiety. She went straight through the mesh in about 20 minutes. My puppy, however, views crate time = nap time and I have no qualms about getting him a soft-sided crate in the future.

Carolyn - If you want to try one, but not spend a lot of $$, try this one: http://www.petedge.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=46652
I have the large and x-large. The large I keep in my car for transporting my GSD who goes to my mom's daily, mostly to keep the amount of hair in the car down lol. I keep the x-large up in my room because she likes to sleep in it with the door open. I really like the crates, but wouldn't leave my girls in them unattended.
